Default Are certain 944 paints single stage and others clear coat?

Are certain colors on the 944 clearcoated and others single stage? I have a Guards Red S2, that needed a major paint correction due to swirls (probably due to auto washed from previous owner). Since it was a long job, I had a professional do it. The detailer and me were surprised when we found out it was single stage. I am assuming certain colors were only offered as single stage?

Yes.

Metallics are clear coated. Solid colors are single-stage.

solid colors were all single stage back then , only if it's repainted you might find it clear coated. Most paint shops use water based paint now so they have to be clear coated.
Personally i prefer the old acrylic paints.

I guess I just assumed by the 90s that all Porsches were clear coat.
Yes the single stage is a tougher paint (have a triumph that is single stage also). But it just makes it more of a pain when doing paint correction/etc.

i would never prefer acrylic paints- eurethanes are the way to go. Acrylics fade, crack, etc...worse than the euro.

My 87 944 in Nile Green Metallic was repainted and not a very smooth and shiney job (minor orange peel and sandng marks ) Obviouse 2nd grade NM body shop that cut corners and not sure if it's clear coat. Downright afraid to sand and polish to seel if I can get it to smooth and shine. I'm thinking its time to sand, prime, block, paint and clear coat ($3000) to make all the rest of my restoration shiny as factory. After all the other restoration, it only seems fitting. I am after all gong to buried in this car.

Disregard the flub above. What I meant to say is: My 87 944 in Nile Green Metallic was repainted and not a very smooth and shiney job (minor orange peel and sandng marks ) Obviouse 2nd grade NM body shop that cut corners and not sure if it's clear coat. 3g for a paint job is cheap, a whole car around me(if the shop does it, most don't do full body sprays) would run between 8-10g for a metallic, and about 7-9 for flat color

only 2 shops by me are willing, 1 is a restoration shop and the other is a dodge stealth specalty shop so my paint is in stock...to bad i'm switching to a nissan color, and painting it myself now too.

i woudn't do a single stage anymore, to hard to paint correct, i'd say 2 stage, deeper finish. only reason for single stage is if you want to have an original factory finish, then a restoration shop should do it as they can legally paint a car with older paints as opposed to new "green paints"(water based)
