Default 91 S2 Starter stays engaged

Need some help. When I start my car the starter stays engaged like the relays are staying open. I can turn the ignition off and take the key out the starter is still cranking. Any thoughts?

i'm thinking it's time to replace the starter wires.

possibly, the insulation has flaked off (or possibly was chewed through).

How do you stop the starter, by pulling one of the battery leads?
Take the starter off the car and bench test it.

I've diagnosed a similar fault in the past to a dying solenoid on the starter. Bench testing is worth doing before you replace the starter loom.

Thanks all. I'll pull the starter and have it bench tested.

Well bench testing at Pepboys was a waste of time. Everything came up as "Fail" and no one there seems to have any knowledge of cars. I know the starter works it just doesn't stop.
What does the starter relay do? How do I test it?

the 944 starter doesn't have a relay to the best of my knowledge, it has a solenoid (the larger half of the starter) that plays that role.

To test the starter, I'd suggest following Clark's - http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/elect-16.htm

[Edit] There's also a great idea from over on Pelican - http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...ml#post6318384

I've ordered an igition switch from Rennbay. Travis thinks it may be that. I'll let you all know this weekend hopefully.

yeah sounds like either your ign. switch is sticking internally or the plunger on the starter is sticking in.

I'd also like to go ahead and suggest that if it does turn out to be the starter (though the ignition switch is also a likely culprit) I'd suggest changing out for one of the gear reduction starters.

Forum member Ideola has a good one on his site - http://garage.ideola.com/prod-HiTorque.html

Check the voltage at the starter when cranking and when the key is released. If the voltage stops on the smaller wire connected to the starter when key is released then it is a problem with the starter. If the voltage remains constant then the problem is with the wiring.

Wiring problem? Find a spare DME and try that.
