Default Lightweight door cards.

I'm wanting to make some lightweight door cards for my 944 to continue the 'racing' look I'm going for.

I've been thinking about using the original cards, stripping them down, cutting out the curve/indentation for map pocket and making it flat, making some nylon door pulls so the opening handle can be removed etc and then recovering in vinyl so hopefully, they will look similar to the ones in the 911 RS's.

Has anybody done this and if so, can they offer any advice?

I have not yet cut out the indentation for the map pocket, but I have crafted some door pulls.

Make sure you reinforce the backing, because the door pull will crack the pressboard backing quite easily.

Recovering is easy if you use some 3M spray adhesive and a bit of patience.

I didn't go that far with mine because there is no weight advantage and if i want i can go back to stock.Got the straps off ebay uk.

Others have gone all the way though and i like the look very much but no turning back once it's done.

On mine, I've already removed the central locking mechanism and electric window motor and temporarily fitted a manual mechanism and winder but, I'm hopefully making lexan units with sliders so the whole window mechanism will be removed.

I'm looking at having either a small chrome handle for the door pull or a nylon pull but, I want to make up a nylon cord to replace the actual door opening lever as well.

I was thinking of leaving the door indentation and making a bungee mesh net to cover it. Porsche used this type of thing on some of its cars so it would look appropriate and save a bunch of work.

Somewhere here I think you can find Chad996's build of his S2....and I believe he did a very nice door card build.

I sliced the tops off the door card, and then made lower sections out of corflute, wrapped in microsuede. I left a tab on the top section so it tucks in below the lower panel, then the lower panel screws to the door as well.

Made my tabs up out of a loop of strapping as above, attached to the stock armrest mount.

You can kinda see the result here...

Some good ideas here, I'm going to go to the scrapyard nest week and see what useful bits I can source. I'll keep you updated!

I went to the scrapyard today to see what I could find and had quite a useful trip.

I managed to source some seat map nets from a mid '90s 3 series BMW (the top net on the picture), an early 2000 Audi A4 (the one below it on the picture) and finally, something that's fairly rare on the UK roads but should be fairly easy to source in the U.S, map nets from a Chrysler Cruiser.

What is good about the Cruiser net is there is no visible frame as each section of net is retained by a metal finisher that is pushed through a hole in the trim hence, I kept the rear panel from the car to use as a hole template if required.

However, the 3 series one is almost a perfect fit over the existing map pocket profile and could be the easiest way to go.
