It's very hard to tell from the picture but unless it's really in very, very good shape I would not pay $2,150 for a non-running 1987 S

As you can see by the posts in this thread, you'll spend $1200 for a motor and $300 (plus beer?) for Spencer's labor....and you'll have a $3600 investment....which unless the car is really cherry otherwise....is about all the car is worth.

I would agree with some of the others....look for a nice, running example and then spend the $150 for a Pre-Purchase Inspection so you know what you're getting into.

Alternatively....if you're going to do a motor swap...drop in either the S2 or 968 motor...may as well pickup the extra hp if you are going to swap anyway.

GL !

It is now on Craigslist for $1500. I think that's a good buy. I'll sell my bare head pretty cheap, having a machine shop fix it (it is missing front and rear cam caps so will need to be re-line bored), and I think you could get it up and running pretty inexpensively. I'd love to have it, but I've already got too many.

Just replace the head – don’t pull the engine.
The cracked head may be from a tensioner failure - that usually rips out the tensioner mounting boss. Some of the S heads did suffer from other cracking as well.

Even if you just replace the head be ready for Porsche Part sticker shock. Gaskets and bearings are not cheap!

ALso, if you decide you want to replace the engine, I'm interested in the one that is in it. I'd love to have a complete engine in case I can get my SP3 light enough to run a 2.5L 16V.

This one had a tensioner failure for sure, the head is broken as is the chain. The good news is the cams seem ok. I'll know more when I get her home and apart.

Time to start looking for some parts.

Nice!!!! I'd said earlier, I've got a bare head that you could use with teh parts from this one to make a good assembly. Would have snatched up this one if I didn't already have 3.
