Default Lakeside Track Test

It's taken over a year to store and ship my car from Dubai to Australia and finally get it ready to hit the track again. My first attempt a few weeks ago saw the exhaust come loose and fall off a few laps in, so I was very happy to finally get to drive it in anger on Saturday!

Lakeside is a great old historic Australian racetrack, it's where I first started racing nearly 30 years ago, so it was great to drive it again. It's short, narrow, bumpy with a lot of elevation changes and no real modern safey features, just steel barriers everywhere, but it's fast and a lot of fun.

There were a lot of other cars bumbling around so it was a bit hard to string together a decent lap time. The car is still setup for Dubai's smooth tracks and it didn't like the bumps much. The new wing has promoted some understeer. The slicks are over a year old and worn out and I have forgotten how to drive after so long out of the car, but apart from that it went great

Here's a few laps. My camera is old like me, so the picture is a bit crappy.

Hello Steve

WEll done nice drive , I am a local , and know how challenging this track is , maybe you should think about joining the local porsche club , we run regularly at this track and all the local ones and there are plenty of 944s for you to challenge in the groups , one is currently 3rd in the championship .

Cheers,

Great stuff Steve! Finally some local driving. Old Lakeside is a stark contrast to those Highways you're used to in Dubai!! Looks like there is plenty more time in there all considered. Think you'll find those 4 seconds and catch that Cup Car pretty soon. Assuming you might be looking for a bigger splitter and maybe some dive planes too.

Keep them coming. Be good to see it at QLD Raceway which looks a bit smoother than Lakeside.

Yep. following the Cup Car around in the morning was easy enough in the traffic. Based on best sector times from different laps a best lap was 56.3, so 57s would be reasonably easy as it is now with a clear track. 55s seems like a good target to start with.

A bit of setup work, maybe soften up the front end a bit. Driving around that track was like racing on the pit lane in Dubai...lol

Hello Steve

THose numbers you are quoting are bloody quick 60 is a quick time at Lakeside , anything under that is amzing , in the old Grand Prix days there was a 100 GBP to break the 60, I think it stayed there for a long time , now many cars can do it and drive home , I am 68 in the 928 , I will see you at QR, hopefully with my car ready again .

That was fantastic! You moved very well out there considering all the road furniture in the way... didn't see anyone you couldn't pass. What's the story on your racing between Dubai and Australia? That may be more impressive than the car itself! Of which that garage shot still remains my desktop wallpaper.

Yes, more pics and videos.

Thanks. Not a particularly exciting story. After 15 years living in the desert I had enough and have moved back to Australia permanently. The racing there was great fun though, I will miss the unique combination of FIA standard track facilities and regulations, endless exotic cars but still a predominantly grassroots motorsport scene.

Glad I bought the car back but not sure what direction the racing will take now I'm here. I have less time and spare cash these days, so may have to settle for the occasional track day overtaking oddball car collections like this one....
