Hello New Member From Cincinnati
Hello All,
Just a quick hello to all the people on this forum. I am looking at purchasing a 951 in the near future and figure this is a great place to start. A little about me, I'm 38 and work as a Bill of Materials and Engineering Change Notification Manager for an industrial firm in Oakley. I currently own a 2004 Mazda RX8 Sport 6 spd, but the high strung nature of the renesis, leaves me begging for more and it is time for me to part ways with it after 5 years. I love the balance/handling and steering and figure that the 951 is a step in the right direction in terms of what my car lacks and what I want in terms of simplicity. I need to feel connected to the road, and it is what I feel is lacking in today's driver assisted world. I would love to look at a 944 in my area, as I have never ridden in one before, and wonder if there are any 944 gatherings around my area.
Thanks

Welcome. You have quite a few VERY knowledgeable 944 folks in Cincy, I am sure they will chime in shortly.
No affiliation, but I did see this pop up yesterday. http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/cto/3173029334.html
Looks to be well maintained and has color matched Fuchs too!

James,
Welcome and good luck on getting a 951. I am just south of you in Lexington, KY. Been working on mine for several years and just getting decent at it. Although the 951 is "simple enough" to work on, there will be times you wish every joint was double jointed and your fingers and hand were half the size.
There is no such thing as a cheap Porsche. Either the maintenance has been done and it is more expensive to buy, or it will need to be done and will add up over time. I got mine for free and have put $6k into getting it dependable. That is doing almost all my own work except some body work. Whatever car you look at, a good PPI by a 951 expert is essential. Hopefully one of the locals can point you to a good resource for the PPI in your area.
I haven't found any 951 owners in my area. I would imagine you would have more luck in Cincinnati. Local friends are invaluable to diagnose problems. Especially when it comes to swapping a part or 2 to determine what needs to be fixed.
Good luck!
Michael

I hope you find a good deal on one. Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware) is very applicable to buying these cars. It's nearly impossible to get what you think you're getting. If you are a decent "wrench" you can do a lot of the mechanical stuff necessary to get these cars right and reliable. If not, your frequent visits to the shop will cost you twice as much as you've paid for the car. I suggest you read as much as you can on these posts to familiarize yourself with the maladies inherent to these cars, take your time and get records of maintenance done. There's a recommended schedule for certain items that, if left ignored, will certainly bite you and a couple that will destroy your engine. I'm not trying to scare you but advise you on making your acquisition of one of these great little cars one you won't regret. Ohio's full of members that are very active in the "club" and there's always something going on during the good weather to help you network. Good luck in finding a good one.

There's a PCA event in Dayton Saturday August 18th- starts with a cars&coffee at the amazing Taj Garaj, then a casual countryside tour that ends with a BBQ / car show at the White Allen Porsche dealership near the 725 exit off I=75. Probably be at least one or two 944's at the event.

Hope you don't mind a recent photo of another red Turbo in the area

Don’t worry, I’ll regale you with tales of the other two thirds of the trip later. For now, I’m going to focus on the wonders that lay within the walls of the relatively externally nondescript Taj Ma Garaj. Just a handful of the cars in this collection would have been absolutely worth the 200 mile drive, and 3 AM red-eye departure that I had to “endure” to see it all.
A Carrera GT with 12 miles on the odometer? Check. A Rothmans 944 Turbo Cup car? Check. A 964 Turbo Flachbau? Check.
The most interesting piece, however is the Taj Ma Garaj special, a custom 356 “Sedan Delivery” with rare Rudge knock-off wheels, and a Carrera twin-cam engine.
More coming tomorrow with a full report on the intricacies of getting lost on the back roads of the Dayton countryside with 50 or 60 of your best Porsche friends.
