Clear polycarbonate timing cover tryout on a 968
I didn't get a timing cover with my 968 so I wanted to try the clear one on ebay and see how it does. The ad on ebay says it fits 924/944/968 but with some trimming on the 968. It arrived yesterday, and I got busy installing it. Here is the pics, and my opinion of the fitment.
The cover looks like it is made of good quality polycarbonate material. It has great optical clarity, and is thick enough to be solidly mounted. The shipping was fine, but there were not instructions. All the ad said was that it would need to be trimmed for the 968. I laid it over the original timing cover which I got form ebay also, and you can see where the differences are. I'm guessing it will fit directly over the 944/951 position with no mods.
I trimmed the upper left fitment under the dist cap so it was a crescent like the original. Then I started fitting it to the lower cover. Two of the tabs for the bolt holes needed to be hogged out a bit to mate up to my lower cover. I used a dremel to put a slot where there was a hole. I used a small washer to insure it would stay in place. The cover also has a small gap in the lower left where there is an arc in the lower timing cover. I'm guessing the 944 will be a better fit.
Over all, I'm satisfied with the product, and would recommend it for those who want to keep an eye on the belts, and are not completely **** about perfection in fit. If it were on a 944, it may be much better. Pics to follow.

Cover and some of the mods for the 968 lower piece. Note the gap at the lower center of the cover where there is an arc in the lower black cover.

I want one... ebay link for reference?
Like Spencer said, if I were to get a clear cover, I'm not going to want to see old crummy pulleys and hardware....could open up a can of worms!

I had a suspicion that this thread would lead to discussion of the aesthetic aspects of the engine, but for me, the practicality of the inspection of the belt is paramount. I will be doing some cleaning down there later. It will not be all new, just cleaner.

I'm guessing from the pic that this is a 924 engine, as the 944 has the arc in the top right of the bottom section.
It appears if you use PN 944.105.048.00, that is the lower section that doesn't have the arc and will mate up better. I may get one of these for my car so the gap is gone.
