Default Auto belt tensioner on a 1985.5 engine?

I pulled the engine out of my new soon to be daily driver (1987 944 na) the engine had a spun bearing. After engine was removed and further inspection I noticed a hole in the lower end of the block, haven't pulled off the oil pan yet, but it appears a rod let loose. "So much for rebuilding this engine"! Next week I will be pulling the engine out of my new parts car 1985.5. This motor runs good so I am going to be dropping it into the 87. I will be doing the belts / water pump before I drop the engine into the car. Is it possible to put the auto tensioner that is on the 1987 engine on this engine. If so would I then buy the belt kit for the 87. Also thanks to everyone who has made posts regarding pulling engines. If it wasn't for this forum and the knowledge that is here. I would not have guts to do this myself

You have to modify the block to accept the tensioner. The bosses aren't there on the earlier motors.

That said, I prefer the earlier manual tensioner - at least you know what tension it is set at. The late spring tensioner can be all over the place, the spring gets soft with use and age, and is a PITA to work around...matter of preference though.

oil pump is also shaped differently to clear the tensioner. I like the early tensioner better anyway- much much easier to work with.

Thanks Guys,

I will stick with the 85 stuff than, Question though if the oil cooler is a different shape does that mean the oil cooler gasket is different? I purchased one (possibly for the 87) as I was planning on changing that along with the water pump etc.

You'll note they said oil pump. The oil cooler gasket is the same regardless.
