944 clutch kit
Buying a clutch for my 1984 Porsche 944. Wondering what you guys thought is the best clutch kit out there. My budget is about 800$. Thanks for any responses.

saches is great, its sprung center rather than the rubber that deteriorates, i just put the clutch kit in my car and i abuse it on a daily basis and it holds up great!

You can save a metric boatload of money by having your clutch disc re-lined rather than replaced, assuming it is the spring-style already.
New clutch disc, spring style - $400. Relined disc (good as new) - under $100.
Depending on mileage and driving styles, the flywheel may be able to be resurfaced. Then you'd just need a new pressure plate/TOB (about $340) and good to go.

when i did mine i got my flywheel resurfaced, it cost $43 so i figured its cheap insurance. it would suck to have to chatter, or hot spots because you didn't want to spend $43

I don't have a spring center clutch disc because I believe I still have the stock clutch in the car. I also realize the flywheel will have to be replaced. I am wanting to know the best brand of clutch to put in it.
I have looked up a centerforce dual friction pressure place and disc and that is for 720$ on summit.com
I have seen a few more options but that is what I'm comparing them too.

When did you buy your 944? I bought mine about a year ago and it didn't have any records with it (don't worry, I checked it out well and got it CRAZY cheap). I pulled the engine recently and sure enough, it had a spring center clutch disc on it. I would suggest pulling the old one out before writing it off - you never know!

Spencer is right, we sent ours (clutch, Pressure plate & flywheel) in to Southbend and got it upgraded to stage 2. With shipping, beadblasting and the machine work to the flywheel and pressure plate, the bill was $350. We could have gone with the old release bearing but it was a little loose so then needed a release bearing, pilot bearing, guide tube and PP bolts for another $250. Here's a pic... Bruce

At this point it is either Exedy or centerforce as a kit replacement. I am looking for something a little stronger than a sachs unless somebody thinks a centerforce is overkill.

For an every day driver the Centerforce Clutch is over kill. A Sachs Clutch is more than enough for a DD. Remember a stiff clutch creates more flex at the fire wall anchor point. A stiffer clutch is used on a Track car where there is not that much shifting done and better holding grip at higher speeds. An example for complete kit needed for the replacement of your clutch.

if this is for a street car, buy the cheapest clutch you can find. you don't make enough power to tear one up, unless you're a complete dumbass and drive with your foot halfway down on the clutch pedal.
I put a USED clutch and PP in my '87S, took 420 grit to the flywheel, bolted it all back up and it's fine. thinking you need a "stronger" clutch is a waste of money. your friction surface didn't wear out--the center broke. my clutch had nearly 130k on it and could have gone 20k more if the rubber didn't shatter.
