Yes, I know my oil lines are dirty...I drive between 40-200 miles daily on all kinds of roads...and looks like I need to replace that swaybar bushing, great...time to get out the power washer

As you can see, very hasty make-shift mounting to simply see if it fits. Looks like it should work, a tensioner similar to stock could go to the lower bolt hole no problem. It might need a long-nose pulley, shouldn't be too terrible to find though. A little grinding on the PS pump mount and it should sit nicely, and still not hang too low. That oil line I can re-position above the oil pressure sender so it's out of the way. About 3/4" clearance to the sway bar hanger, guess this is a good excuse to get/make some sway bar braces...

That was fast ! Looks great ,better than i thought . Does the pulley align with the crankshaft pulley ?
Is that alternator the 100A version ? i see online there are many versions of it starting at 70A peak (40A idle) , would be a waste not to get the 100A version.

Pulley does not align as it sits - I am planning on trying the standard power steering groove pulley if I can to drive it. Most alternators have interchangeable pulleys, so it's just a matter of finding which one sticks out the right amount...hopefully a V-belt can drive that many amps!

Looks like the off-the-shelf rebuilt units are 80A. I do see that there are higher output versions listed for this (pretty sure it's off a 1993 Cavalier 2.2L) but some of the high output (100+ A) are slightly larger. I might be able to make it fit there though.

BTW, this unit weighs 10lbs so no weight savings.

Spencer,

What supercharger unit will you be running. I though about using an electric steering pump and mounting the AC where the ps pump is now. I think Dubai944 did it this way.

Eaton M90, just like blown944. I don't think there is sufficient space for the AC compressor in that location, unless you re-engineer the sway bar mounting. Then you might run into problems with the radiator hose.

Also, I don't know how strong the PS pump mount is compared to the AC mount (8-10HP pulling on the compressor when engaged, plus the weight of the unit).

That said, one advantage a race car may have over a street car is of all things, ground clearance, or the lack of concern thereof. Racetracks are usually smooth, not bumpy like roads, and the only hazards of low-hanging parts come from if you go off the track. If you can manage that, then there should be sufficient space directly below the crank pulley for an alternator or AC compressor, which would be cool for CG and a very short belt.

This is a picture I have shared many times, but you never really realize how big this SC actually is...it will be about in the location it is in the picture, a few inches lower.

Update - returned the unit I had because I remembered seeing some newer, cleaner looking ones the other day. The one I have in those pictures was the CS-121 type, the ones I got are very slightly larger, a CS-130 type common to many late 80s/early 90s GM products.

The two I picked are both recent remanufactured units - one is an AutoLite and the other a BBB. After some investigating of part numbers it seems the BBB is an 85A output and the Autolite may be 105, not really sure. Either way I should be good.

Took them to O'reilly to have them tested - both good, steady 14+V...I paid for the warranty on these ones ($5 each), but have another spare alternator I can return to them for $20 back...so I will end up with 2 good alternators for $35

It is more or less the same alternator case as the CS121 I had before, it is maybe 3/8" larger diameter but the mounts are the same.

Ah memories. I see this and am reminded of a drawing I did a long while back for a manifold for this setup.
