Default engine build newbie needs reference material

hi guys, i am about to purchase a 3.0 16v s2 engine to put in my '82 euro 944 as it bolts straight in with not to much effort. i haven't stripped or rebuilt one before, only undertaking fairly simple repairs and servicing.

so can you guys recommend any books/manuals to teach me the basics of "how an engine works' and to get me started understanding general rule of thumb stuff (what to replace while stripped and how to tell why etc.). i intend to fit it stock except maybe with an aftermarket chip.

i intend to document the whole process on RL for other amateurs like myself to follow.

Mitch......

Good luck

You must take complete engine with everything attached to it together with engine computer and complete harness if you want to make this work. Too bad your car isn't 85.5+ since it would be way easier.

For that high a level of information, I don't think there will be a need to pick up a text book.
Just run a search on how internal combustion engines work, and you should find enough information.
This one came up first, so it's probably worth a read: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine.htm

You"ll want to down load the applicable manuals from the link Voith posted and keep them on your computer. Having it local is handy for faster access.

ok, i finally got to sleep around 2:30 am after reading through that link and other material. and now have a very good understanding of internal combustion. out of interest, why is it easier to swap into a later car specifically?

Swapping to a later car uses more of the original compoents of the car.
For example, early cars use an incompatible instrument cluster
