I have to have a repair done on my muffler and I have heard it is prudent to disconnect the battery, perhaps even pull the plug on the 'brain.' Is this necessary? Its stainless so presumably it will be an electric process with inert gas?

I'm not sure I would trust the welder to know. I am sure he would know to place the grounding clamp near the welding site, but to disconnect electrical components - not really. You should probably ensure the DME is disconnected - it would be a shame to have to buy a reconditioned unit because of an electrical transient.

If the welder is MIG or "wire feed welding" there is no danger to your car other than the heat from the welding arc. TIG or "heliarc" welding uses high frequency to initiate the DC arc on stainless steel and is on constantly for cleaning purposes in an AC arc used to weld aluminum. The high-freq can cause havoc on electornics and I would always disconnect the electrical system welding with TIG on any car I have welded on.
