Default Turbo S rear tires P245/45ZR16

I just purchased an '87 951 with Turbo S brakes / suspension / wheels with a K27 turbo. Woot! It's a track oriented car with full bolt in cage / OMP seats / 5 point harnesses.

A look at the Tire Rack site shows that there isn't much choice in this size. They are only listing track oriented tires (I already have 2x sets of BFG G-Force R1 and Toyo R888's). I'm looking for something more streetable with reasonable wet performance.

Any suggestions? Will a P245/50ZR16 or P245/40ZR16 work? I would like to keep the rims. I have 2 sets now with the aforementioned track rubber but I want to mount something for the street on one of the sets.

40's may work, but the 50's will be pretty big in diameter. 1/2"+ may cause rubbing issues depending on your offsets.

Thanks Jim - just found the Fuzions as well. Anyone else have experience with these?

Though not in that size, I do run the Fuzions on my daily 944. I like them, but haven't seen any rain with them yet.

I have them on my Turbo-Look.

Noisy but okay...good grip for the street.

Default turbo s tire choices

There really are no tire choices available in the original size for the rears 245/45/16. Fronts are no problem 225/50/16. Until very recently there were no matching front and rear tires available from any manufacturer that would work on the 951 since BFG shut down the G-Force Sport line of tires...more on this in a minute. I recently spoke with Chuck Beck (Beck904) at the Sebring 12 hr race as I noticed he was running the Gforce on his 904's. He explained that BFG stopped production on the Gforce, but; was introducing a new Comp2 version in April 2012. IMO the only viable option is to upsize with BFG Gforce sport comp2 tires. While these are not available in the OE size for the rear, they are in 255/50/16. Before everyone gets too excited, I know the overall diameter is larger and this translates to a roughly 6% speedo error (my estimate). You just end up compensating for this. I have no rubbing/clearance issues. There really are no other choices available. Installing anything narrower than the OE 245 really is a mistake as you really need the traction with the 951. my $0.02!

This is my experience as well. They're even pretty good in cold temps and in the rain, but are utterly useless in the snow. Like, park the car and walk useless.

In the dry they do hold on surprisingly well, and they don't squeal...they just roar when rolling.

...and the 245/50 size is referred to in other threads as the 'bitchin Camaro' size as it's appropriate for third gen cars.

Here in Europe we still have Toyo T1R and Continental sport contact also some old stock Potenza S02 but i would't touch an old tyre.
The T1R is still pretty common and easy to get hold of.

I have the G Force sports on my cab, and I really like them. Not as cheap as some others, but great value IMHO. I guess I'll try the new ones when I need a new set.

I've got a set of 17X9 996 twist wheels with old azenis tires that would be perfect for a track oriented car. There are lots more tire choices when you move up one inch in wheel diameter.

i've finally sorted some tyres for my car, Toyo T1R's in 225/50/R16 and 245/45/R16 on 7*16 and 8*16 early offset fuchs. they tyres are readily available now, but i'm not will have them balnced and fitted the weekend after next.

I'm not sure if they're available over your way but they are popular here for road cars that see limited track use and we are a very wet country. the only issues people have with them is side wall flex on cars much heavier than a 944.

Paul - thanks for the link to the old thread. Called my local guy about Fusions. It's funny he can get the 245's for the rear but the 225's are backordered. 4 weeks! I guess I will leave the Toyo R888's on a bit longer.
