Blaupunkt also considered. I'm looking at a Nakamichi CD400 otherwise, but would prefer an Alpine for the features (iPhone, Bluetooth, maybe Pandora) if it would decently blend in. I already regret the styling language of HUs these days. No blue lights on my classic dash! Thanks.

JVC makes units that have adjustable colors.

i put this Alpine CDE-9845 unit in my 85 RX-7. it has adjustable colors for the buttons. amber is one of the colors. matches well to the 7 and i think will be great for a 944!

Does anyone have experience with the newer Blaupunkt CD players (i.e. http://www.swstereo.com/stdetail.php?prodID=106)? It looks like it would fit reasonably well with my interior and I like the USB input on the front for my iPhone, but I'd appreciate any feedback from someone who's tried it

This may be a little out of reach for you, but most Alpine models have a European counterpart with an 'R' at the end of the model name. Those have amber illumination, and with a few exceptions, the face plates do interchange. Do your own research on this one, though.
I've also done a number of conversions (as well as adjusting the brightness of the non-dimming LEDs on Pioneer head units) and it's straightforward if you have good access to parts and a rework station.

Thanks, everyone- I should have mentioned it had to be a black faceplate too. I unfortunately do not have time to swap in bulbs though- I barely have the time to research and install something. Looking forward to replacing a basic Kenwood CD HU with no AUX and broken AM/FM bands. I also don't have time and patience to 'CD shop' through my collection every day before I drive! Much as I love to hear the turbo whine, I'm a music junkie and addicted to Pandora.
YGPM- thanks
Interesting. I'll scope some of these out- been looking on eBay anyway and the international sellers do pop up. Thanks!

Ever heard of units from Becker? In my opinion, these are the most OEM-looking available. They have iPod compatibility too.

Yeah, Beckers are neat but your link has the only ones I've seen that might work. Pretty expensive without modern features, and no prices there even. eBay is mostly old stuff on these, though I appreciate their OEM-ness. Likewise in looks with the older Blaupunkts from 10 years ago- I absolutely hate the new ones.
Probably going with a decent looking Alpine or Nakamichi.

What features are you looking for? The Becker Traffic Pro, CDR220 and CR220 are expandable. They have cables for aux in and preamp outputs. The cheap iPod cable that's available isn't iPhone compatible, nor does the head unit control the iPod. Blitzsafe does make an iPhone adapter for it though, which is what I have in my car. Made in Germany and looks correct in our cars. The Nakamichi is made in Malaysia.

Look at the kenwood excelon x995, it has adjustable colors and can be made full amber (including display). The ipod control is good and it has bluetooth. I had the x993 before i ended up with a bt900 and it was great.
