Default Inflatable Spare Tire

When I am not on the track I like to carry around the inflatable spare tire. But I was recently thinking that the rubber is 25 years old!

Does anyone know any alternatives? Can you get replacement rubber or wheel?

I also have AAA and a can of goop but I really hate to put that crap in my tires. When I was a kid I worked at Goodyear and nothing sucks more than dismounting a tire that has the leakstop crap in it.

Excellence did a write-up on Porsche spare tires a few issues ago. Their assessment was that these tires are basically safe to use for limited duration at low speed (35mph or less). Also, because the spare is protected from UV rays in its stowed location, the degradation of the rubber is much less prevalent than on regular road tires.

I would assume it would be dry-rotted. You could probably drive on it for a little bit but I wouldn't trust it too much. Like ramius said I wouldn't get going much over 35. Limp it home or to the closest tire shop.

Throw it out and replace it with a can of fix-flat and a small air compressor, done.

I carry a can of flat fix and a small compressor but it won't help you if there is a blow-out or a cut to the side wall.

So is there any options for a replacement other than carrying a full size tire?

No. There is no replacement for the existing spare tire.

I have used a 25 year old spare tire twice in fact (Same tire actually). It got the job done which means it got me home. The storage location in the car under the carpet is actually pretty good to prevent dry rot even on cars in Arizona. Plus since it basicly flat I think that keeps the interal stresses low. Still inspect it and find out.

I wouldn't keep those fix-a-flat cans in my car
