Default Half shaft information needed

I have an 89 S2 that I'm slowly bringing back to life. The most recent project is swapping out the half shafts because the boots and bearings on my current set are shot. I picked up a used set for a turbo/S2 awhile back and want to change them today. I started to look at them closely because I have no clue which end is which (someone please enlighten me) on the used set and that's when I noticed that they were slightly different that what I currently have installed.

The shafts are larger in diameter on the used set than what I have currently in my car. The used set also doesn't have any clips on the boots like the set that's on my car, yet the boots are tight and not letting any grease escape. Are these just variances that occurred over the years? What's the differences between the turbo/S2 half shafts and a regular 944? Any thoughts, ideas, explanations would be appreciated. Don't really want to start into this project until I know for sure that I can complete it with the correct parts.

turbo/s2 half shafts were larger than those found on an 8v.

i don't think there is a difference between the left and right side half shaft.

pics of these clips? i think i know what you're referring to, but i'm not 100% sure

Guessing clips referred to are the crimps that keep the boot tight to the shaft. I wouldn't worry about them providing the replacement joints show no wear and but do show evidence that they were greased properly

The first picture is of the one on the car that has a clip on it. The second photo is from the used one I purchased.

IIRC there are four types/sets of shafts. 924S/944/951 to 86 were smaller in diameter then the 951 from 87on was bigger. The S2 used the 951 from 87on. 968 was two different lengths either side as was all the autoTX.

Seems like yours were changed in the past to the early type by mistake. The ones you have to go on now are the correct type.

As for the boots, some come with clips, some not. As long as the seal is tight and no grease is escaping you should be good. If you feel like there should be something there use a tywrap.

MGK944__I'm not following what your saying.Ok the 924S/944/951 to 86 had the smaller diameter shafts___951 from 87 on was bigger, the S2 use the 951 from 87 on.Maybe it just me but the one on his car look lot bigger that the used one he purchase,if so the one he purchase are the wrong one since the diameter is smaller????Lol could be my old eyes are playing tricks on me.

OP said: "The shafts are larger in diameter on the used set than what I have currently in my car."

I understood that as: The used set the OP is going to fit has a larger diameter than what is currently on the car. So he is going to be fitting the correct shafts for the S2.

I might have read it all wrong, I have had a few beers!

Lol don't think it's because you had a few beers but what the OP is saying versus the pics don't jive.

My S2 half shafts look the ones currently on your car and are 26.2mm in diameter if that helps.

Honestly dunno and have nothing to contribute because I gave up due to a time crunch at work and home and just had my indy swap in a new pair from Paragon, but OMG, what a difference new ones make. You'll be glad you went through it once they're in!

Sorry about the poor quality pictures, they were taken from different distances so they aren't to scale. The old ones are approximately 26.2 mm in the center where I measured them and taper up a bit around the boot. The used ones in the box with the pink packaging stuff in the background are 27.3 mm in the center and have no taper. The old ones (came with my car) have a taper to them where as the "new" used (supposedly from a 951 or S2) ones don't.
