First off you don't need to do this.

I would talk to the insurance companies and make sure to get 2 quotes if possible of the damage. Get one at the shop of your choice then another at a shop of the other person's insurance. Its going to be a total loss no doubt. I would try and get what you deserve for the car. Make sure to bring up anything about the condition say it was maintained the whole 9. If you have receipts definitely include those. The first offer isn't the last.

I have an update about my 944.

Dealing with my insurance ended up not being frustrating at all. The adjuster spent a long time checking the mechanical and cosmetic condition of the car, the options, etc. He also considered the receipts I had for maintenance and work that had been done on the car.

They found only a handful 1989 944s for sale by dealers in the US and the final settlement was for $10,100 which I was happy with.

I bought the car back from them for $950 and ended up selling it as is to a friend mechanic who is going to get it fixed and put it back on the road. I am happy that this exceptional 944 is in good hands and that it will not end up being parted out. Personally, I felt like it was time for me to get over it and move on to the next one.

Thanks everyone for your support!

Congrats! 10K for an NA is a great number.
Have you found the replacement yet?
Landjet had/has a beautiful S2 cab for sale for less than $10K.

This 944 has a special story, it was Thomas' first car. The original plan was for him to get a beater to go surfing. He then realized that he really liked the 944, change of plan, let's get a beater 944 He eventually got hooked and ended up with this really nice guards red NA. And he quit surfing.

The red "sisters" during one of our spirited drive:

I am glad this ends well and I am as excited as he is regarding the next one! Likely to have two more cylinders but that's a different story

Wow, that's a great settlement price! I'm surprised they gave you that much for a N/A, but glad to hear it all worked out and it's gonna end up getting fixed. Have fun searching for your next one and let us know what you end up buying, with pics of course.

I think a turbo is in your future, Sean! That seems like a really nice, no hassle settlement. What ins co are you with?

Ted, I was with Geico. The adjuster I met in San Francisco was very helpful. What they did is basically take the average price of 1989 944s that were for sale at dealers in a few states (they found 3 at around $7k) and adjusted for condition, mileage and options of mine (that added about $3k).

It is indeed a good ending to a sad story. I don't know yet what my next toy is going to be, but I'll make sure to let you guys know!
