The Wix ones I got were about the same price... Why would the filter really affect things?

you are supposed to only use the OEM Mahle filters with the internal check valve
This picture is borrowed from Rennlist. On left is an Austrian made Mahle OC75, which can be bought as original Porsche item as well for 924S/944/968. On right is a US made LS154. As you can see there is a differnece.
If even more cleaning capacity is needed you can use 993 primary filter. It can be found under several numbers:
Mann/Knecht W7303
Mahle OC213
Even though they are under several manufacturing brands, they come from a same factory in Austria, which also fabricates all filters Porsche installs at the factory.
I suppose Porsche branded LS154 is made by a company called Champ. http://www.champlabs.com/

There is an internal valve on the OEM (or those Olli specified) that prevent the oil from draining out of the oil filter when the engine is stopped. It's supposed to make sure there is oil going on the first few turns when starting the engine instead of just refilling the filter in those few starting turns. At least that what I understood.

The same filter is made under several different brands at the same factory, brands like Porsche,Mahle,Knecht,Tecalemit etc.

To the OP - hard part about Mahle filters is that hardly anybody stocks 'em. There is a foreign car parts place about 45 minutes away from me that does... but I'll never find 'em at the local Autozone. I wound up ordering half a dozen from Pelican and just keep 'em "in stock" on my shelf at home And for the record... I use them because the Rennlist collective say they're better, and it's convenient for me to just order a bunch at one time.

Well let say you can debate the rigth kind of filters for our cars all you want, but having use (Mahle OC-142) for the past 29 years first on my ex 944 & now on my 968 without any drawbacks or problems is the proof that it does the job properly. So I'm not gone to reinvent the wheels & will use the same for years to come.

I got a few wix ones to keep on my shelf so I'm set for a while. I suppose next time I'll order one from pelican because it's just as cheap and people CLAIM it's better. But in my eyes a filter is a filter, and if it does its job then I don't care.
