I remember a day when picking oil was as easy as walking in to a store and picking an oil. Now that I'm a Porsche owner, it seems like I'm going to have to learn things. I've been reading a bunch of the oil threads. I'm not sure what my mechanic put in for my last oil change, but he did charge me $180 for it. That's the end of him doing... about anything. I'm up in Boston and will be driving in the winter, I don't think it gets much lower than 10 below here. It sounds like 10w40 is a good option for these conditions? Or is a 5w more appropriate?

Thats good stuff . Run it in the M3 and the Ole Chevy . Keeps the Vanos quiet and not a valve tick to be heard . No 951s in the stable , but my N/A gets the Rotella T .

I think all of those "normal" oils are good recommendations.

For what it is worth I use something different. I use the Mobil 1 5W-40 synthetic year round in my 1986 951.

Dont let it worry you any that it says Turbo Diesel Truck Oil on it. The Rotella is of course for diesels too. The additive package and the ZDDP is what we are really talking about.

While this is certainly good in the cold, I live here where it is hot . My car does not overheat or get the oil too thin. I have had good oil pressures too at all rpm and temps. Of course these cars are not like my truck. The Porsche is not going to go too many miles without an oil change. I could get by with extended drain intervals in the Porsche but why would I want to.

Since you're the closest to me, I'm wondering if I should start running the same if you've had great success with it. It seems choices here are all over the map- I'm surprised the engine apparently takes well to any of them (?). Should I try my luck and ask if M1 0W-40 would work year-round in Dallas as well? That's what my other cars take.
