if i had a 944T and i weren't running a catalytic converter, i would definitely run M1 0w50 in the fall, winter and spring. then run the thicker 15w50 during the summer. the 0w50 is a formula that's very expensive to produce, flows extremely well in the cold, yet carries about 95 % of the viscosity of the 15w50 at running temperature. if i were in an area that gets below 15° F, i'd run straight 0w40.

however, if i were running a catalytic converter, i'd run M1 5w50 in the cold months and the M1 15w50 in the warm months.... others will say run a thicker oil all the time, including brands of 15w50 that are thicker than M1 15w50... but, this is what i would do.

oil/SAE grade ................... visc @ 104° F............................. visc @ running temp / 212°F

Redline 15w50 ....................... 138 ............................................... 19.6

Mobil 1 15w50 ....................... 125 ............................................... 18

Mobil 1 5w50 Rally Oil ............. 108 ............................................... 17.5

Mobil 1 0w50 Racing Oil .......... 100 ............................................... 17.2

Mobil 1 10w40 ........................ 96 ................................................ 14.7

Mobil 1 0w40 .......................... 75 ................................................ 13.5

Run some Brad Penn and don't worry about it. It has the ZDDP that your engine needs and isn't too overpriced. The oil is from here.

My short response, run Brad Penn. The ZDDP levels are right where you would want them.

But for much much much more reading on the topic of oil read through this 91 page thread form a 911 board: 91 Pages and counting on oil in the 911. Sure the 911 and 944 are different animals, but there are some compelling arguments that do apply to the watercooled cars.

I use cat oil... I hear it's best!

I tried bacon grease once, but found my belts cept sucking in cats due to a front end weep... hence my shift to cat oil!

I haven't done a change yet, but I'm pretty sure I was told it's been using Castrol Syntec 10w30 (came from Nashville)... somebody tell me if this is wrong, as it's what I'm using to top it off every month! Next change may be a flavor of M1 (now in Dallas).

Is there not a standard oil for this engine? In all my other cars, it's always been, "use this grade" only.

Is there an easer way to fill the engine with oil rather then slowly pour it in the dipstick hole?

i usually get more oil on the floor then in the sump

They are just pulling your leg & they're very good at it.I see your new here & asking which oil to use on this forum is just like stuffing a cat in a canary cage.If your been using 15w50 both in the summer & winter and had sucess with it keep using the same. But if you don't feel comfortable with it just drop her to 10w40 during winter. My personnal choice is Valvoline VR 1 racing oil it has everything in it to keep your motor alive but like mention mention it's my (religion).

I can understand what your going through & your rigth about asking which oil you should use in your 951.The problem is that oil is like a religion in the water cool circle & each owner has it's own idea of what is the best & it can get very confusing as which brand & grade to use that will do the job properly.Over the years (since the 70s) I've use 20w50 in all my Porsches either water cool or air cool, never once did I had any problem with oil.Of course they were always stored in the winter time.So if you think 15w50 is to thick for the winter(in the area where you live) like mention drop her to 10w40.Now brands, chose a quality oil with the rigth amount of ZDDP for your car, mention here were Rotella -Mobil-Brad Penn- Valvoline, those are good quality oil.BTW your car is now some 20 years old & what is good for example a (996 motor) migth not be the grade of oil you want to use in your 951.
