Default Gotta love old cars

Having done nothing to the car electrically speaking, except my aftermarket stereo install (which was months ago) my trunk light decided a few days ago that it wants to work now.

So when I open my door, I now have a bit of illumination. No idea why it suddenly works, but I'm grateful that I've got it now.

My favorite thing about old cars is that 90% of their problems can be solved by jiggling something, smacking something or turning up the stereo and ignoring it until it goes away.

Got stopped for a taillight the other day. Got out, smacked it, bingo, got back in, thanked the cop for pointing it out and went on my merry way.

The first thing I think about when I get in a newish car is "man, I don't want to be the one who has to fix all this electronic crap."

same thing happened to me at an inspection station in VA. the guy called me in to show me why he was failing me... my license plate lights wouldn't work. i just pulled up the carpet and moved the wires around til they did, no problem, passed with flying colors.

My blown exhaust manifold gasket and I would have to disagree.

I can't hear the stereo.

That would fall under the other 10% of problems.

Installing the wrong type bulbs in the parking/turn signal indicators made them go out and take with them all the side and tail lights as well as the dash lights.
And the headlights will not go down.

Love these cars.

Interesting on the trunk light. They are connected to the top of your rear hatch shocks, so when you open the trunk or door the circuit is opened and the light turns on. It's also the same circuit as the map light above the rear view mirror, cig lighter and glove box light. When any of those ground out the fuse blows. Maybe you have bad bulbs in the glove box and map light. Here is a pic of the connectors on the hatch shocks, please excuse the wet mess as this was a few weeks ago. Thought my 2 cents might help you get the other lights working.

How reasonable is it to expect a local tech to even troubleshoot a NAV system that's on the fritz? Will spares be available in 20 years? I really doubt it, and the way some of the gadgets are integrated into the critical systems, that could mean the car gets junked.

The Ford cars that park themselves just scare me to death!

New car owner to mechanic/insurance assessor:

My steering wheel caught my tie while it was parking itself and tried to strangle me.

My car didn't warn me that there was someone in my blind spot.

When I was falling asleep at the wheel the steering wheel didn't shake to wake me up.

It didn't apply the brakes when the car in front stopped suddenly.

etc, etc...
