Hi new 944 owner here, i got it off of a trade for a ford ranger. Body and paint are very clean, interior needs some work. And I have a few issues to address..
Inner tie rods could use replaced
Idle surges and runs rich, I think I see an iac under the intake manifold?
Rear brake caliper isn't releasing (already tried cleaning/greasing it)
And has a small oil leak coming from passenger side front of motor but can't trace it yet.
Just looking for some help from people that know these cars. I'll slowly be getting it up to par. Where's a good place to source parts?

idle surge is often the iac where you found it. try unplugging it and see if the surge goes away
might need to rebuild caliper all the way
oil leak likely from oil cooler seals
tierods are easy

Mine has an oil leak, pretty sure from the crankshaft seal...

Forgot, timing belt has to be change on a 944 every 35/40k miles or every five years (don't matter how many miles you put on it),also when doing the belts you should do the water pump if no record of it being change are available. You'll want to buy an updated water pump aka (turbo style) if you still have the the early model on your car.

I tried adjusting the idle but it just surges unless I adjust it to over 1500rpm. I suspect the iac, I'll disconnect it and if no change I'll clean it first. I have to take the intake mani off to get to it right?
Tie rods should be easy but as far as replacements I've only found inners and outers together, and not in a pair for both sides.
Oil leak I'll degrease when I have time, and try to trace but it's not leaking bad.
I have no idea if timing belt has been done, if it has a cover I'll take it off and look at it. I'm just really busy with school and work I wish I had more time with it.

Believe me friend you don't want to go 60k-90k miles on a 944 timing belt, not saying it will go nuke on you next time you start your car but they got the bad habit of giving up on you all at once without warning when they get old & pass a certain mileage, your motor is a close contact one & it will bend the vavles if the belt snap (worst case scenerio it will also damage the pistons ) ,taking off the front timing belt cover is an easy job & worth checking them. Here a diagram off the front cover, second pics is what you'll be looking once it's off.

All depend if your 83 has manual or power steering ,that should be easy to tell.PS you'll have two belts instead of one.Stock brake calipers on an 83 does the job just fine, plenty of stoping power for street use,you could maybe knock them pins out clean them up ( just a little grease on the pins) & reinstall, also while at it check your wheel bearings (for play all around).See Clarks Garage.

I think most the play when I checked were from the inner tie rods, I know the rack has some hard lines going to it so I'm assuming it's ps but haven't had as much time as I'd like to get under it.
