CA Smog Station Guide
I Just got my '91 S3 smogged and was told that the Check Engine Light wasn't working or he couldn't see it illuminate when starting the car.
Huh? Check Engine light? Never seen one in a late 944. He seems to think it's supposed to be above and between the Fuel/Temp and Speedo.

If it's got a 968 motor, there may be a chance it had such a light. I don't know specifically relating to the 944/968 series but Check Engine Lights became more prevalent with OBD-I, around 1991. If the 968 was so equipped you may need to swap clusters.
That said I have never seen a check engine light in a 944 either.

There is no check engine light in the 944 (at least not my 86 turbo cluster) and none thorough the whole series of 968 clusters. I doubt one would have come and gone during the oval dash run.
The square between the Fuel/Temp and Speedometer is a blank. I don't think it was ever used for anything other than keeping symmetry of the cluster (balances out high beam indicator). Possibly it was intended for future use or never used from a revision that never made it to production, since a light socket is molded behind it.
In both my 86 951 and 968 instrument clusters, I've removed the black paint from the diffuser (yup painted, so even if a bulb was placed in the socket, no light would get through) and applied a red clear and use it as my check engine light for a standalone EMS.

From: one thousand, five hundred miles north of Ft. Lauderdale for the summer.
these stations represent the most catastrophic confiscation of wealth evaaar.
you are misinformed concerning the lack of a check engine light for the 968.
my 968 had a check engine light before i removed the bulb.
default codes and 'how to' for turning the 968 check engine light off without diagnostic equipment...

i also removed the silly brake sensor and wiper fluid lights.

Odd, I didn't see any mention of it in the bulb tables for all years in the 968 FWM.
I don't know what year my 968 cluster is, but it definitely does not have a light stating "check engine"
