Default $5.00 Filters

Save your money......go to any Home or Hardware store and buy these....for less than $5.00 (they are for the rectangle floor vents) and you can change the filter once a month for two years. I also spray them once a week with FABREEZE.

If you own a 924/944/951 and want to convert to the setup in a 968...the cost is about $135 in parts and filters from Porsche...which equates to about 52 years of filtered driving as pictured in the below photos.

For 944 owners...

In the link given above Raj stated that cabin filters were not in the pre-'94 cars, but that may be incorrect.

In any event one can replace or retro-fit a pollen filter to the early cars.

A quick search found:

"I did it on my '87 944. Here are the parts you need:

o 944 572 905 00 Pollen Filter retrofit Kit
o 944 572 464 00 (2) Self Tapping Screws
o 944 616 105 00 Resistor
o 944 616 106 00 Resistor Cover
o 944 572 593 00 Gasket

Basically you replace the 944 heater fan cover and the resister with the 968 parts...and then the 2 pollen filters mount on either side.

-Steve "

A more comlete search will turn up more information on the subject.

Jim, what you are discussing is related to 944's and not 968's. On 968's, they only had a screen until 93.
As suggested, you would have to retrofit later 968 parts to get it to work with the factory style cabin filters.
It should be easy to check on PET.

I've been down this road. You can't just swap in the upper shroud on a 944. The flap doors won't work correctly. The shafts are different because the location of the vacuum actuators is in a slightly different position. And on one side, the flap is actually too short and doesn't cover the opening completely. It's easier, and probably cheaper, to find an entire 968 assembly. I do not know if the upper shroud is a direct swap on the 968. It might be.

Scott - while that's an economical solution, and it will keep out the large stuff, it won't filter like the factory filters. The OE filters are pleated paper and do a very good job. The filters aren't cheap and they're supposed to be replaced every two years.

You can see the shaft differences between the flaps of a 944 and the 968 w/cabin filters in this picture:

Scott, good write up. I thought I was the only one who did this, haha. I used air cleaner replacement filter material with the charcoal and baking soda impregnation,(Holmes #HAPF60 from Walmart) and velcroed them to the outside of the screens since I didn't want to take a chance on one of them coming loose and getting sucked into the squirrel cage. You'd be amazed at how much dust those cut down from getting on the dash and in the cabin.
