Ultra cool, Ultra original.

What bodywork is that? What wheels are those?

Exactly my point. These are the important values in a period correct sports car. These are the pushed aside far too often while "internet judging." Take the car with a grain of salt.

Most people are too busy studying the future, or particularly, the recent past. If we just looked to the roots, we'd be better off. This is slowly but surely resurfacing as an ideal of mine.
Exactly! Some people think "old School" was a style that we strived for back in the day. Trust me back in the 70-80's people weren't trying to be Old School, we were trying to be "new school" and modding cars with what was available at the time. That "look" that is now considered old school these days.

Notice my 44? Who in there right mind would have bought an 86 944 brand new, and chopped the top off to make a convertable? Why not just buy one...oh wait, Porsche didn't make one for another 4 years! and no one knew at that time that there would ever be one. It was ubber cool at the time. Less so now when you can buy an authentic 44 cab. Its all perspective of the period that the work was done.

To the OP. Cool pics! I would have drooled over it back then too!

Wish you had more pics. Love the louvered hood and ultra wide slotted mags.

The 924 in the first photos isn't a 944 "kit" like the one in that catalog. The front fenders are a dead giveaway, much wider.

I know it's hard to believe that anyone would spend the money to have a custom kit made on a 924 like that, but back in 1986 it was probably cheaper than a 944. Not to mention this could be a turbo 924 which had more potential than a regular 944 before the turbo came out in 1986.

+1

I have almost every Corvette Quarterly magazine from the 70's. You should see the adds in the 1973 issue advertising: "Update your 1968-1972 Corvette with retrofit plastic bumpers!!" People couldn't get rid of the chrome bumpers fast enough, they looked "old"

My father went to a Ford dealer in 1969-1970 to trade in his Corvette for a 427 Shelby Cobra. It was heavily discounted because nobody wanted it, they were old, has been cars. He kept his Corvette....

An amazing find. For someone to go to alot of trouble in the early 80's like that is incredible. It would be great to get some history on this one.

That was my first thought on being told it wasn't a factory job: the parts aftermarket wasn't anything like as deep or as easy to access as it is now. Someone went to a lot of trouble to create that car, and they did an absolutely beautiful job of it.

I think I'll spam the HI PCA officers and see if anyone knows anything.

Okay, message sent to the PCA Hawaii Board of Directors:

Hi.

Sorry to spam all of you, but I'm hoping someone can help me (us). I was in Oahu twenty five years ago and I spotted what I thought was a 924 Carrera GT and snapped a couple of quick pictures as it went by. I recently found them and posted them on RennForums and the conclusion is that it's not a 924 Carrera GT, but a modified 924. The car is so heavily modified and so beautifully put together that I was thinking someone in your PCA region might know something about it.

I've attached the pictures I took, and here's a link to the thread in RennForums: link.

Thanks for your time,

Shawn

This is not incredible.

I've had my car since I was 18. I'm 22. There's a reason I don't post many pictures of it...

Maybe I shouldn't have "spilled the beans" earlier, but this is the result of doing something with your hands... this dude couldn't go to Lindsey Racing and buy some poorly designed part. Heck, he didn't even have the internet to read that this part was poorly designed...

It's the simple things in life that count.

OP very cool pics. I hope you can get some feedback from the guys in Hawaii. I'd imagine a car like that back then, would have been *known* to the locals
