944 Turbo Coolant Pump
Hey all,
Ever since I flushed my radiator, I've occasionally noticed terrible noises coming from the turbo coolant pump. It doesn't always run loud, but occasionally it is much louder, almost making an 'air powered impact wrench removing a lugnut without the clacking' kind of noise. Like it has a real 'tone' to it, rather than just a buzz. But it's not really quite a squeal.
Plenty of fluid in the system and after about a month of driving, I don't think there are any air bubbles left.
It still seems to be working. Are these kinds of noises normal? Does it operate at different speeds based on temperature? Or is it time to get a replacement?
Also, how difficult is it to replace? I haven't been able to find any good walkthroughs on the subject (searching keeps bringing me to the standard water pump).

Here ya go. I replaced my turbo pump after I found it to be severely corroded and non-functional. Water had gotten inside the motor housing and it was a packed with rust. The motor should just hum quietly when in use (Every time the engine is shut off). The Porsche pump replacement is really expensive. I went with the Mercedes pump and converted it to work. Really an easy conversion, getting it out/in is a pain though.

There is a guy in California who sells a crap ton of used 944 parts on eBay. I just got an aux pump from him for like $70 and it works beautifully. It wasn't even dirty. I highly recommend buying from his store if you need a new one. PM me if you can't find his stuff on eBay.

Mine made awful noises a few years ago. My mechanic who is an instructor in our club was riding with me and the pump went on after we were out on the track, he flipped off the plastic cap on top of the motor and sprayed it with some kind of thick lubricant and then replaced the cap, it has worked fine since.

No. If I remember correctly it should run for 30 seconds after every shut down. Check out the link I posted above, it has a good description of the coolant pump operation. I forgot right now which temp sensor it gets its signal from, but there is also a relay in the circuit specific to the coolant pump.
