Best 4x6 oval dashboard speaker for 944?
Can anyone recommend what he or she thinks is the best 4x6 oval speaker for the 944? I've got a new Alpine system in my 1983 944. I'm using the front speaker for soundstage but the speaker I've got in there isn't particularly good. I want to keep the European 4x6 oval format because I don't want to cut up the dash. Suggestions?
Many thanks.

Everyone has their own preference to speaker, and it all boils down to what you think sounds best. There are a few good speaker threads here, just do a search. good luck, and let us know what you end up picking.

I'm afraid I still need help. I did a search but the answers seem to be about front speakers in the door, which I'm assuming were fitted to later models. My 1983 has a single front speaker in the dash. Has anyone done a replacement for that speaker? Thanks.

my 85 does not have that center speaker and its an early 85 with the older dash like the 83. behind that grille is just an empty cavern. i prefer infinity speakers. alpine speakers are nice and they are somewhat reasonably priced.

think outside the box. I put a pair of tweeters in there. If you're just looking for fill that's the best you'll come up with. They're actually a pair of Infinity small tweeters out of an older Jeep Cherokee. Junkyard cost? $5.

Thanks, Pettybird. That's an interesting suggestion. (I used Infinity Kappa tweeters in an RX-8 and they sounded great.) But wouldn't I have to add a high pass filter? If so, what you recommend? And do you have any particular Infinity in mind? Thanks again.

I haven't pulled my dash in my 85.5 yet, but when I do, I'll let you know if I've got a speaker.
To be honest, I've got a soft spot for pioneer speakers. not the low-end ones, but not the top of the line ones either - have never done me wrong.

Infinity tweets on the 462.9s are very bright, like most other metal dome tweets.
I always thought of making a baffle board and running a 4" or 5 1/4" up there when i had my 924s and going 5.1 in the car. Now that i have a late dash thats off the table.

Amazon also had a good deal on the Infinity Kappa 4629CFP. Originally $150, on sale for $63. I'm going to give it a try.
I hope to keep the highs under control with a combination of the treble setting and the front-rear fader switch. So the setup will be Alpine head unit, Alpine speakers in the rear side panels, and the Kappa in the front.
I'll post the results after I put the speaker in. Thanks to all for the advice.
