Default I know when to admit I was wrong

And boy am I glad I was wrong!!!

Turns out the lack of power to my wheels in my 85.5 n/a 944 was indeed a cv problem, not a dead transaxle. Having had the same problem before where the ring and pinion blew pushed me (in my panic) to convince myself that a mew tranny was in order...again.

BUT, with the guidance of the 'I've-been-there-too' rennlisters, I was able to properly diagnose and repair my problem. <3 (thx Spencer)

And now I have a spare transaxle in the event of something really bad going down and needing one!! (thx Kris!)

My only concern was wondering if I got enough grease in the new cv joints I got from autozone. I greased them up like crazy and worked them as much as I could, then put some more in, but I worry that the grease may need time to warm up and work itself down into the cv joint, and I'm planning on pulling it back off in a week or so to add a touch more grease into both sides to be safe.

Any thoughts or tips? thanks to everyone who added their two cents (and in some cases, .42$!)

If you follow that Clarks Garage link I sent you, I think you should be pretty good, just make it look like it is in the pictures. :P

the internet always delivers

glad you got it goin again. make sure the CV bolts are torqued to 30 ftlbs, and recheck them some time later, they tend to come loose sometimes.

I followed as close as I could to the clark's garage link, but the CV joints came already assembled and I don't have the tools to yank them apart, put them back together. But there was about that much grease on them when they got put on. We'll have to get together for some Frosty Ones and take a look-see here soon.

When I first bought my car I got it cheap because they thought the clutch was blown. Nope - just a disconnected CV axle. Every Porsche I've had since - I safety wire the bolts!!! Haven't been able to get the threads clean enough for loctite.

I actually got fresh new bolts, as one of the old bolts had totally broken, and I don't wanna take that chance again. But what is this safety wire you speak of (If you'll forgive the noob nature of that question)
