Default Spilling gas when pumping

When I pump gas in my 944 from gas station, the gas pump won't auto-stop until gas started to spill. Any of you have the same problem?

NO, because I would never let the pump handle sit on the fender, or trust auto-stop. In NJ, it is against the law to pump your own gas ....however in the 9 years I have owned my 951, not one gas station attendant has fueled it....

I have seen issues with gas pumps not stopping. I think it may have something to to with old pump handle styles or maybe new pump handle styles on old/new cars and vice versa.

The location of the gas filler on the 944 doesn't make it easy to get the nozzle in deep to the neck of the filler, either. You have to be careful not to slam butt of handle into fender every time.

I would think if it happened to me even ONCE, I would NOT continue to use the "auto stop" feature . That said, no, I haven't had any fueling issues like the one you mention.

Yup, happens every time.
Mine comes out but just enough to puddle by the hole, doesn't pour onto the side of the car, or anything that matters like that.

Mike
That's what the leather material piece is for, to sit on the fender.

I use autostop, but never let the handle rest on the car. This can distort the filler neck. Many 944 spec cars have had fuel come out the neck when turning left hard. This due to the cap not sealing around an ovalized neck. This pretty common where you have large heavy vapor recovery nozzles.

I also use autostop, but try to predict it as when hits it it can still overfill slightly. By stopping a little early you prevent the overflow from forthing. Kind of like filling a coke at soda machine.

You can tell when it starts to get full by listening to the sound.

Also, I hold the nozzle sideways at an angle so it sticks further in.

That's what I do, as soon as I hear it "gurgle" up the pipe I stop pumping.

I had it happen to me once but I think it was a problem with the pump rather than the car.

i also never let the gas get to the top of the filler neck. i listen and when i hear that distinct sound of water rising to the neck of a bottle, i stop fueling. i just don't trust the stop stop feature..

i think your US pumps are different then the ones in Australia, ours hardly fit into the fuel filler hole, i need to hold it at a funny angle so the pump wont shut off because it senses the petrol when it hits the nozzle indicating its full.

I just filled up my 84 for the first time the other day. (also in jersey) after I did, the whole car smelled like gas for a few days! Come to find out that it had overflowed a little bit, and the overflow drain hose that's attached to the hole was NOT connected. It had dumped gas into my wheel well.

That problem has been solved, but I will be pumping my own gas from now on!

Never heard of not being able to pump your own gas! Do they have people who stand there and pump it for you or something?
