Default The 944 (85.5+) Instrument Cluster....

Is it supposed to be very very dim lit when having the setting to its brightest and lights are on? Is there any after market option avaible to replace those gauges?

Mine works fine, but it's quite hard to see when driving at night not in a well lit city.

A quick rennlist search will yield many results on this topic, with ideas for cleaning up your existing lights or replacing with LEDs. Also, clarks-garage has instructions for fixing this.

It's one of the many charming qualities found in an 80's car... Just learn to love it!

or.. there are many options to brighten it up.

Just recently i had good luck
-Removing the Instrument Cluster (fairly easy, about 6 screws and 3 big wiring connectors) *and No, i did not remove the Steering Wheel..
-Simply cleaning the bulbs
-Removing the old reflective coating from the Light Tunnels with Nail Polish Remover
-Carefully Taping Aluminium Foil down Flat to Act as New Reflective Coating
= Now the Dimmest Setting is as Bright as the Brightest Setting was previously... and the Gauges are easy to see at night.

Be careful Using High Watt Bulbs as they can Melt the Plastic Housing/ and LEDs can actually be Too Bright at night, and lack a dimming setting.

as i said, the Dim Instrument Cluster is one of the Charms of an 80's sports car!

If you're lookin' at the gauges, you're not driving fast enough.

Another simple and too expensive option is 944 Reverse Glow Gauges.

Ooh that's exactly what I was looking for, thanks pnbell! (edit: dont fit 86 and has bad reviews... )

Edit2: looks like http://www.speedhut.com/custom_gauge...number-253.htm is a better option.

Seen those glows on a few cars, quality is questionable frim the start, printing is not sharp and after about 6 months then they delaminate. 9xAuto kit is great if you like spending $30 for $5 of parts you could pick up at your local auto store.

I did double sided silver metal tape, the type that is shiney on both sides and has adhesive on one side. Got it from a craft shop. Cleaned off the old finish, fitted the tape and cleaned the bulbs - good as new.

+1 its your light tunnels...clean the old stuff off install new reflctive material (and bulbs while you are there) and your good to go.

I chose the kit as everything was there but read some have used tin foil..not sure how long that would last though.

I did this 8 or so years ago and it has worked great ever since.
