Default Water Pump Modification - is this doable? (with photos)

My 1989 2.7L NA 944 water pump has the black plastic fitting that returns coolant to the header tank (and I think houses the thermostat)

I have in my possession a new earlier model water pump with the machined surface for this fitting, but with no water hole drilled into it.

Is it practical to have the required water hole machined into the older model water pump to use it on my car (for when I do cam belts etc). If so this would save me from having to buy a new water pump.

Thanks

Dave

Can you provide a pic of the pump with the fittings you're talking about? I bought a new earlier version of a water pump for my 87 NA and it has a small machined fitting that is used for cooling the turbo I think. If you don't use that option you buy the fitting that is internally blocked and looks like a hose fitting. I just don't know if that's the issue you're dealing with.

an n/a should not have anything hooked to that. That hose should go to the radiator on the passenger side. The 2.7 pump is definitly different as well. Get the hose routed correctly and block that off w/ the white plate instead of the turbo/black.
