Default Timing cover/belts covered in oil.

So i did the WP/TB/BB on my 944s last weekend and i pulled the upper cover to check on things today and found everything coated in fresh oil. I have good oil pressure still.

Any thoughts on what i should be looking for? i realise i have to pull everything and replace all of the belts again, but where could this be coming from? Front crank seal? balance shaft seals? something im not mentioning here already?

Thanks for any input.

All the front engine seals. Front crank main, both balance shafts, the camshaft. Each of the balance shafts and cam have a very thin mylar seal that if not in good shape, will leak oil. Also if the races for the cam and balance shafts have a groove in them, oil will leak past it even with a new seal. Also check the oil pump drive gear, as it can have the same groove.

^+1. Maybe the front crank as the oil pump drive could get moved around. Seems like the BS and cam seals would be more difficult to upset while doing a belt/WP job, though still possible.

Did you replace the green front crank seal "O" ring?
Did you purchase an OEM front crank seal and not a NAPA, AZ or aftermarket?

I did not AZ, and thats feeling like a $100 (wasted belts) mistake. As it is i can't tell exactly where its coming from since its a huge mess so i think im just going to pick up the complete front engine reseal kit from paragon with the races and get it done.

I would replace the cam belt (~$15-Pelican or?) and clean the BB with Simple Green. The BB is not under any strain like the cam belt.

I would also only do the front cam seal and "O" ring now unless you have visible other leaks.

When you press the front crank seal in use a simple DIY press from 1-1/2" ID black PVC and a BIG washer. Using the front crank bolt as the force to press in the seal.

Ugg i must have been brain dead when i was looking at belts. I saw the $72 balance belt and didn't think about it. Good thing i haven't ordered it yet. John, i've been thinking about it and ill give your method a shot. It really seems likely that its the crank seal as i didn't do anything to the balance shafts and they don't rely on the pulley to load the seal correctly. Ill get the crank seal/o-ring and a new 16v timing belt ordered in this week and do it on saturday. I'm getting pretty good at taking the front of the engine apart so it shouldn't take long.

Thanks for the help!

Just out of curiosity, any idea on the condition of the cam chain tensioner pad? If you haven't checked it, might be a good time to pull the valve cover since everything will be apart.

Good luck!

I haven't had the valve cover off, but i do have a receipt from 2003 showing that it was completely replaced along with the chain and the rest of the head was redone at the same time as the car had a timing belt "event". Its only had 20,000 miles put on it since.

That receipt was actually one of the big reasons i decided to buy the car. Granted its had a lot of other little problems but its really nice knowing it was done.
