Default Looking at a 968

I am going to look at a 968 this weekend... I am just wondering what options were available on a 1992 968?

This is a convertible and a manual gearbox... I know those were options but my question is pertaining along the lines of...

What wheels came standard?

Did it come with an LSD standard?

The car is just shy of 100k miles and I know the headgasket on these is usually good for 125k but other than standard maintenance what should already have been done?

I know this almost a 20 year car and I know its a porsche so things will come up but what should I be looking at right now?

This will be my first Porsche but it will be adding to the family collection, My dad has a 2005 Boxster S... Thanks for your responses in advance.

16 inch wheels w/ 17 inch option.

cars with lsd are rare. the cars never really came with enough power to truly take advantage of an lsd, but they're out there.

lsd and M030 suspension are separate options.

headgaskets are good for the engines life, barring any unforseen events..... but you're near 100~120 k engine service which includes a lot more parts than just changing the timing, bs and serpentine belts.

find out if the cam chain, cam tensioner pads, H20 pump, tensioner, pullies, hall sender and front seals have been done as it's now, 'time'... find out when the belts were done. it's not a matter of mileage, but 'time,' find out if the oil pan has been dropped and pickup cleaned or replaced and pan cleaned.

find out if the AC has had work. motor mounts could be ready for replacement.... is the car on it's 2nd, ps pump yet? has the steering rack been replaced? does the steering have any play? have the ps lines or oil cooler lines been replaced.

are the brake discs at spec? have the fuel lines in the engine bay been done. they need to be. how bout the transmission oil? fuel filter, spark plug wires, plugs, cap and rotor? the distributor rotor can age and fly apart leaving you stranded.

replace it, replace the fuel filter and do the belts immediately if neither has been done in the last 3 or 4 years. check the suspension bushings... as they'll rot from the ps oil getting on them...

there's probably plenty to do.

LSD is actually an elusive option! ha ha

Personally i love having it, but some people complain that it makes the car handling more dangerous, and causes uneven tire wear...

Lame! Ha Ha

I looked up the M030 suspension and sadly this car is not equipped with that package.

Dude my 16 hp lawn tractor has a LSD and it takes advantage of it on a regular basis. Yes my 968 has an LSD and if it did not have one I would have added it.

OP- look at the option sticker or give the VIN to Jeff968 and he can tell you what options were on the car from the factory.

yes, i'd much rather have one in there than my current setup.... i'd install one if i was passing 300 hp. but it wouldn't be doing that much for my 250 hp car. but again i'd much rather have it than not.... i have made an agreement to buy an lsd in good working condition (from one of the guys) next spring, but i'll have finished my extensive front end updates, and LS3 swap by then.

A very important step that everybody seem to forget and is not mention here is to get a PPI (pre purchase inspection) done before handing out your money.M030 & LSD is the least of your worry rigth now, what you need is a mechanic or a shop that not only knows about P cars but also 968 like the back of their hands. They will be able to tell you if the car is worth the price ask for & also what will be needed in order to bring it to date. The price paid to them for doing so can save you $$$$ in the future and is your best insurance against buying a money pit. Please take the time to visit this place www.clarks-garage.com & read before purchasing a 944 (which purchasing a 968 will be about the same)

Convertible top parts can be expensive as they didn't make that many in the "big scheme" of production numbers. make sure the top is in proper working condition! I imagine the winshield is different from coupes too.

Differed maintenance is a big killer on these cars (924/44/68 series) so check for all kinds of maintenance records. if the records aren't there, budget to address them if you consider purchase.

Does anyone know of a good shop in Austin, TX? or better yet does someone on here who knows 968's live in Austin??

I am currently studying for my insurance licensing exam and thinking about this car is keeping me from my studies.

If one don't even bother to replace the wear out shifter boot/**** I wonder what they didn't bother to replace on the mechanical side. Here is an exemple of a coupe for sale by an RL member.92-74k miles -Cashmere leather int- with KW variant 3 coil over & M030 sway bar-new clutch & rebuilt steering-asking $8k.Ask them if they have any maintenance records for that car.Be cautious this is an Infinti dealer don't mean to say is a crook or not honest but they probaly don't nothing about a 968 lol even some Porsche dealer don't know what there looking at when it come to our cars.

I bought my 968 in Austin a few months ago and had the car inspected at TPWS, an independent Porsche mechanic. The report was very comprehensive and was $200. Highly recommended.

That car sold in about 3 days. All maintenance records dating back to 1998 were there. The car was meticulously maintained. Having said that, coupes bring more than convertables, and manuals bring more than automatics.
