Default Just when I thought things were looking up

I believe I killed my tranny tonight.

I was in first at about 4k, shifted into second, heard a big -clunk- then a terrible rattle/grinding noise and no power to the wheels. This had happened to the stock transaxle as well. I'm not sure if I've broken a gear or the ring-and-pinion in the diff or what. I just know that it was a PITA to fix when I had proper tools/workplace, and will be more so now that I have no garage or proper jacks/ motocycle jack.

Thanks for listening to me vent.

Had something similar happen to me a couple of years ago - turned out that the transmission had snapped one of the bolts connecting the transaxle. The CV joint on the transmission side exploded, making a noise similar to what you described, and lost all power to the wheels. Luckily, being the Army, I used the breakdown as a physical training session and my soldiers invented the 1/2 mile Porsche Push event. Not sure if you've really gotten to look at it yet, but hope that it wasn't actually transmission!

I just had the car on the lift at the shop on Monday evening checking the CV's to see if any of this was upcoming here. New CV's arent too bad. The other I cant say.

I'm Thinking/Hoping its the CV too...

If this a stock 944na, i would be surprised if you broke the Transmission... I mean people have V8s and High Boost turbo engines attached to these trannys with out failure!

944V8inDFW - a much needed laugh this morning. <3

pnbell - this is indeed a totally stock n/a 944. having looked up the numbers of the car, it had an lsd from the factory, and I blew that tranny pushing 3500rpm in 3rd gear. so this one going out under similar circumstances -though aggravating- isn't a totally unheard of (or even uncommon :-/ ) thing for this car.

all that being said, I'm still praying that it's just CV joints and not the transaxle. But I'm mentally preparing for the worst.

I think he's gonna come pick it up. I'll probably have some time to help on Saturday.

PM me if you are serious about rolling out to help me. I will cancel my plans to go to this wedding and get this thing done. If I/we don't do it this weekend, I think I'm gonna tow it down to San Diego as I got an amazing quote for time/labor and I don't know of any very reputable shops closer in.

I can't be without transportation for more than a few days, as I am still looking for work.
