I was intrigued by the whole v8 stuff and recently got offered a drive in one and it was impressive. It was a converted na and the guy spent 22k total on used engine, kit, used suspension, used brakes, used/rebuilt transmission etc., in fact everything you must do to make the car handle the extra power. He admits it might be worth half that if he is very lucky, the interior and bodywork were already in near mint condition. He helped a friend of his convert his 951 and the cost was $17k keeping the stock drivetrain, a used engine, conversion kit and 5th gear swap. The interior had the usual cracked dash, seat wear and the body was 6/10. Again he'll probably get half that on resale if he is lucky.

I admire their efforts, they will have years of enjoying the performance with hopefully minimum costs. They must also love the 944 to do this. With the price of 05-07 Corvettes in the $20-30k range they could have taken the easy option and probably not lose too much on resale. But I guess that is not what we Porsche people are about.

Today shop one agreed to pay for the parts. Shop two is doing the labor. I should get my car back next week.

Happy to hear it is getting resolved. A bitter pill for both of the shops, but part of doing business. And thank you for keeping your beautiful Porsche a Porsche.

Sounds good, but do you mean Shop Two is doing the labor for free? or for $$ at Shop One's expense?

The shop that did the rebuild (two) is eating the labor and the tow from here.
Initially they wanted labor from shop one, but that wasn't going to happen.
They are happy to get reimbursed for the parts (OPRV, rod and main bearings).

The worst part of this whole situation is that it could have been avoided if shop one had just taken a deeper look at the OPRV. But they convinced themselves that it was something in the short block, and that it needed to be torn down. They wanted the rebuild shop to pay them for the tear down. That's where it all fell apart.

Lesson learned. Cost of doing business.
