New Daily Driver
So I am starting to search for a new daily Driver. I live in Northern NJ so I do want something that will do a nice job int he snow. I am currently looking at two very different cars. I am looking at the 2011 Jeep Liberty and 2011 Jetta TDI. I know they are very different kinds of cars but would like to seek out anyone who owns either to share their thoughts. (My current daily Driver is a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport Stick 4X4)
Also if you have any other ideas please feel free to share them. (I do want to get a new car as I have never owned a new car and think it would be nice)
Thanks in advance for sharing you opinions.
Just to make sure we keep a bit of 944 in here. I am keeping my 1988 N/A but like to save it for fun driving and as a good weather toy.

I wouldn't get a Liberty. Fuel prices are going to do nothing but go up. I think the Jetta is a good choice. If you were looking at the Liberty for the interior space, you should consider the Jetta Sportwagon TDI. Also, I know you said you wanted new, but you may be able to find a used Ford Escape Hybrid in your price range, they come in 4wd which would be great for the snow. I'm also a fan of the new 2012 Focus, might want to check that out.

My .02 worth. In this economy and with my feelings about buying brand new (yes I listen to Dave Ramsey every now and then)........
I would buy a good 2006 or 2007 vehiclewith low miles. You could buy it outright instead of finance (if you have a pile of money in the bank then never mind) . Gas prices are going up, I came very close to buying a black 2006 (IIRC) Jetta Diesel I think it got around 40 mpg. After I sale the Feiro GT I may look atthem again.
Remember...you asked for all opinions.

New cars are great.. for the warranty.. also nice to experience the depreciation drop the minute it leaves the lot
The only thing in common between the jeep and the vw is the "wagon" shape, so clearly you are a practical minded soul. If I were to guess, you are looking in the 20-27K range?
For a "new" car in that range, I always find myself drifing towards
1) GTi/Golf
2) Mini Cooper/Clubman S
3) WRX (non Sti)
Other than some snow, what else are you up against? Kids? Driving coworkers/meeting clients?

I second the mini... I have one for a DD and love it. I have a second set of wheels for winter with snows and can go threw almost anything, and I got 36.8 mpg two weeks ago going up to Watkins Glen. Best car I ever bought!

Check around for a used Fusion AWD, very nice, economical too. I'd echo the thought of keeping the Cherokee, if it has less than 200k and isn't rusted to pieces.

What about a Certified used Range Rover? Darn things are best overall. Don't know about the gas mileage but they're great in the mud, snow, off-road. The guys on Top Gear love em.

oh and ive got a fusion as well. its really not too bad. its the most base model that you can have with the V6... it really does get out of its own way and gas mileage is mid 20s combined.
