is it hard to get in gear, or does it seem like it is just hard to move the shifter? the linkage on mine right under the shift boot was binding up on me, sprayed some lithium grease on it and its been fine ever since.

I would check the shift linkage under the boot first as well.
If that looks good then crawl under and look at the linkage on top of tranny. If that looks really grimmy spray it down with some brake cleaner first, liquid wrench second, work the linkage, then spray it with more liquid wrench, open beer, drink beer, once beer is empty and liquid wrench has soaked in try the shifter again and see what you got.

Check out the clutch too...
Put the Car in Neutral; Go back to the Transmission (follow the Torque Tube to the Rear) The Transmission has a Rubber Plug the shape of a trapezoid, remove this plug, reach your hand in there and grab the Torque Tube.. Can You Twist it Left and Right? <--- Sign that the car has a failing Rubber Clutch..
When mine failed, shifting gears became very difficult sometimes impossible...

Well, finally had sometime to drive the 944 again. It's rather unusual to me in that the shift from first to second is fine, and vice versa, it's moving into the other plane that it because difficult. Meaning it's difficult to move it from second to third, and vice versa. Ironically it's as easy to move from third and fourth as it is first to second, however, fourth to fifth is difficult again. Any one have an idea what this is or even what I am trying to say - lol - going to look at the shift linkage this weekend.
thanks

Check to make sure the "E" clip on the shift lever under the boot is connected.
If your shift lever looks like this--hour glass--replace the shift lever.
Replace the white plastic cup under the shift lever mounting plate if cracked.
Check the security bolt at the rear of the linkage that has the wire tied to it.

Check to make sure your shift linkage at trans is not cracked. It is part plastic and I've seen a few crack.
