OK, so I've been doing a lot of reading, searching, and some watching of the '91 S2 cab which I knew for sure I was going to buy. Well during all this I've been seeing and reading more about the 968 and have become more interested in learning more about it as well. As I go through the 968 like I did with the 944, I wanted to hear what others have to say about either of the cars.
Pros and/or cons of each?
Which do you think is better than the other and why?
Which is more rare?
Which is going to keep its value higher in the long run IYO?
As always thanks in advance for your reply.

I would assume the 968 would retain its value better in the future... there were only 12000 made worldwide. regardless of how many s2 cabs were made, it shares its body with the turbo(which is a good thing imho but doesn't make it very rare looking...) and is a "944" of which over a hundred thousand were made...
the 968 has more power, more torque is a more rifined chassis, and the first production Porsche ever to have variocam... 3 years before the 993...
looks are subjective but i feel the 968 has a more familial appearance to other newer porsches but i love the older turbo look too so thats a wash for me...
good luck, i hope this helped!

I have had both. I kind of prefer the look of the 944S2 cabrio but the power is better on the 968 and there are supercharging options for the 968. Build quality might be better on the 968. The 6 speed I am indifferent to for a street car.
The 968 is more modern looking but still looks 15 years old. I think the 944S2 cabrio is more striking and has nice clean lines. I like concealed pop-up lights in general so that is a design feature of the 944 I prefer.
Cheers,
-Joel.

I have a 91 S2 Cab I purchased on a whim and didn't really consider the options at the time but looking at it I ended out with the better fit for me.
Personally I prefer the look of the 944 allot more then the 968 but that is subjective.
My experience has been good used parts are easy to come by for the 944 not sure it would be the same for the 968.
the S2 has a back seat which I actually get quite a bit of use out of with my kids. The 968 is a 2 seater with storage in the back. This is a big one for me.
968 has more power and a 6 speed. Who wouldn't want more power.
I redid my 20 year old stock suspension and there was lots of reasonably priced options since you can bolt in anything that works on a turbo.
Both will cost the same to maintain.
968 costs more to purchase a nice example.
Not sure if that helps you at all. Whatever you do get a good one with records. Pay specific attention to the roof structure as those parts are hard to come by and costly. A cheap Porsche is very expensive.

I love that one. I think it updates the tail nicely which in my opinion is the oldest looking part of the S2 Cab. Never liked the 968 front end as much as the turbo somehow the lights don't work for me.
Except of course your 968 Ernie which is perfect

Great comments guys!
I too (like most above) prefer the front of the S2 with the rear of the 968, and yes the white one is a great example of this. I do however like the 968 front when I see owners convert the "pop up" lights with a non pop up setup (There's a really nice Amethyst on ebay, minus the gullwing, but even that makes it look good).
Rear seats are a plus too!

To me, 968 "***" looks a little too heavy. I too prefer the style of the 944 in this case.
From Wikipedia
S2 Cab production = 5600, with 2400 coming to the US
968Cab production = 4400,, with 2250 coming to the US
So, in the US, I'd say they are equally scarce, but ALL 944S2 came with a MANUAL while most 968 cabs came with a TIP (or automatic)..
do NOT buy any of these cars as "investments".. The only TRUE investment 968s are the 4 factory race cars- the rest will struggle to keep up with inflation and will COST more than inflation to maintain.

Personally I'm a big fan of the looks of the 944 S2 Cab, but really like the 968 looks better in Coupe form than the 944S2/Turbo.
The 968 Cab has a bit more weight (3240lbs) than the 944S2 (3109lbs), but it also picks up more power.
I would think both will hold their values well. I have been seeing a decent amount of 944S2 cabs listed recently in the 12-15k range even with higher mileage...which I think is high for that car and places it right in the price range of a good mid-mileage 968...
You should get out and drive both for sure, that's going to be the only thing that can make up your mind. They'll both look nearly the same from the drivers seat anyway
