Default 84 engine in an 87?

Hey guys, I'm contemplating taking a look at an 87 automatic 944 for my mother tomorrow. The seller says the engine has a knocking noise, and I'm not quite sure what it would be, but I'm going to assume it will need an engine (worse case scenario). I can get my hands on an 84 engine no problem (5speed) but I wanted some reassurance as to whether or not I can swap an 84 engine into an 87. Any advice on this situation would be great! Thanks

The motor swap should be fine.... However The bell housings will need to be swapped also... and I am sure there is a few other items too. possibly do a search on manual trans conversion...

Good luck...

very little differences in motors. The 87 would have the updated water pump and tensioner/computer so use as much of the 87 stuff as possible.

make sure u use the car's own AFM. the 84 engine's AFM won't work with the car's 87 DME
