Oil capacity/quantity S2
Hi all, just changednthe oil in my '90 S2.
Due to the shape of the I can see that not all the oil will drain.
I did not try to pump it out or anything and gasket doesn't need doing so a simple change was all that was in order for the moment.
Did the filter too.
I then put 5L in and ran the motornfor 5 min to get oil into the filter and around the motor. After letting it settle it seems to read at the top of the dipstick indicators.
I didn't add more yet.
Driving it it shows jus under 5 bar under power and 4 idle whe warm - maybe a touch under after running for a good half hour.
Still, when it settles shows full on the dipstick.
So... Most references (owner manual and online discussions) say you put more like 6.5 L in. Is this because I wasn't able to fully drain it? Or do I not trust the dipstick? Should I add 500ml at a time till I get 5 bar and 4 solid?
What do you reckon?
Cheers,
Will

6.5 litres sounds right. I use 5 litres oil packs and end up putting one full pack and just under half in every time I change the oil and filter. You will never be able to fully drain it because of the external oil cooler although it does help if the oil is warm when you drain becasue it flows more easily (not too hot or you can do yourself an injury!)

Yes, it was warm and flowed out very fast predictably missing the pan at first
I guess I am just wondering if I should put the 6.5L in as the manual and other state and not worry too much about the dipstick level which seems very difficult to judge exactly anyway.
Prior to the this change it read "overfull" by the dipstick but the oil pressure and temperature was pretty much perfect.
Should I just add more at about 500ml at a time till I have either 6.5L in or the oil pressure is right on 5 under power when warm and just over 4 on idle when warm?
Since the external oil cooler will hold oil and the sump doesn't drain completely is it not wise then when changing from one type of oil to another to do two changes at the first instance to flush all the old oil out as much as possible?
I changed from Mobil1 5w40 synth to Valvoline 20w50 semi synth (and higher ZDDP).
Thanks for the reply and confirming the quantity and dynamics of the external oil cooler.
Appreciate the insight guys on something as simple but critical as the engine oil servicing!

Trust the dipstick. Overfilling the oil can cause engine damage, or at least mess things up with the crankcase ventilation.
Oil pressure is not a measure of oil level.

Do you have the correct dipstick? I believe there is a difference in length between the NA and turbo dipsticks. Perhaps the PO swithched it. I realize not all the oil is drained, but when I change my oil I always have to add 6.5 litres.
As indicated earlier, oil pressure is not always indicitive of proper oil level. After doing some long freeway driving and not checking my oil for a while, I found my oil level was at the bottom mark, but my oil pressure had not changed. Needless to say I topped up right away!

I always go by the dipstick in my 968 which has the same engine block as your S2.Never never run the motor with the oil lower then the minimum mark (see red stick in the pic) you can get away with it at the halfway mark but the oil should be kept at the top mark (see white stick) do not over fill it.Quantity are approx 6.87 US qts or 6.5 liters per oil change.Something else very important about those 3.0 liters that most owners don't know either it is an S2 or a 968,is the engine stoping procedur.Do not stop the engine immediately after hard or extended driving ,keep engine running at increase idling (approx 1,000 RPM for about two minute to prevent excessive heat built up before turning it off.Btw I didn't invented this procedure Porsche did,it's in your owner manual .
