Default Heavy Valve noise

Long time no post. For the most part my 944 has been sitting waiting for me to buy the water pump etc etc..
I have a 1988 944 NA

So long story short I changed out my water pump, front crank seal and both balance shaft seals and reinstalled a fairly new timing belt and balance shaft belt. Rechecking the timing etc etc. I used Van's directions on youtube. Priceless by the way. Everything went smooth as can be. No siezed bolts or nuts. I was missing my power steering due to the bracket being broken, installed a new used bracket from a fellow rennlister. PS works great!

HOWEVER... Now I have a massive amount of upper end noise almost like the lifters are out of oil. I triple checked all my timing marks and verified my oil pressure is within spec. 3.5 -4 bar at idle and 5 when revved. I did not go near any of the common causes I am aware of which would starve the top end of oil. I did torque the crank bolt to 155lbft per vans directions. I must qualify my experience as I am a Audi technician and I do work at a Porsche Audi dealer and while quizzing my fellow techs noone seems to have a answer to this problem. My question is, Has anyone else had this problem on here and what did you do to fix it?

Here is a Video of what I am talking about. Several people on Youtube have had this problem as well but I get so many mixed answers I would rather ask you all directly.

My car sounds the same, I think it's just injector noise. The primitive ones on our cars are pretty noisy.

Do you have a recording of that?

No recording of course. I will say that I know fuel injector ticking. This is definately not fuel injector tick. It is loud. Like a old typewriter.

This video might be a little closer to the actual sound.

I just did the same repair last week. We should have combined forces for efficiency. Isn't it nice to drive with power steering again?

When I first bought my car I had horrible lifter tick. For an oil change I drained out a quart of oil, and added a quart of ATF. I warmed up the car, and changed the oil hot. The tick went away, and has not come back.

Definately. ATF makes sense as it has detergent in it to clean. What I do not understand is I did not touch the oil system except for a few minor exterior seals. I seriously doubt it is injectors. Just sounds too mechanical. I put my ear on the bottom end and it sounded fine. So it has to be something on the upper end. Anyone ever tried Seafoam to correct this issue?

Run the engine to 3000 RPM for 5 minutes and see how it sounds when you return to idle. If it doesn't quiet down completely, try one more time. Driving it will do the same thing, though.

ATF visc might speed it up a little, but the detergents in ATF aren't as robust as motor oil. Thats old voo-doo.

I used seafoam on my 90 3.0l. It sat for about 5 years and the lifters were making noise. 1/2 can of Seafoam in the oil for about 10 miles and I had a silent motor. Changed the oil and there was no noise for the 3 months the engine was in the car.

944 is a Flat tappet engine and you guys are just damaging your cam lobes and tappets if you are not running a high Zinc-Phosporous oil.

I am going to try the 3k rpms for 5 min when I get home. If I get nothing from that then I will entertain the seafoam. I just have a feeling maybe there is crud stuck in the check valve in the head. No real reason behind this conclusion.

Had the same noise on my ex 83(which happen to be a sticking lifter) so a buddy of mine with is 89 ,in both case we use this & it did cure the noise. If you do try it follow the instruction carefully then give her a good drive (at least 5-6 miles & don't be afraid to step on it.
