Conventional thinking for a Audi tech is the opposite. Flat edge on the crank pulley goes towards the block to protect the belt from the engine itself.

I have been driving my 944 all week and it is running the best it ever has. Having power steering again is priceless!!
I am glad it is fixed. It was so worth fixing the power steering for me too!!! I almost just put in a manual rack. My belt is still a bit loud. Next weekend I will recheck the tensions.
