Default Aircooled to watercooled - Hi!

Hi all

Damn this Porsche bug - now I’ve crossed over to the water-cooled side

Two weeks after selling my 964 I’ve unintentionally gone and bought another P-car.

Browsing Craiglist and Autotrader for a new daily I stumbled on this 1993 968 that had been traded at the local MINI dealer.

GP White (like the 964) Blue interior (like the 964) – Hmmmm…

Excuse the bad pictures but I had to share

Welcome to the water cool world Rob,seem to be a very nice original exemple, now you don't mention mileage or if any maintenance has been done prior to buying the car .So things to look for will be belts/water pump/ cam shafts tensioner/pads & chain.Rule ot thumb timing belts every 4 years or 35/40 k miles which ever come first ,pads that the chain ride on are made of plastic & will get brittle over the years if they break it could cause very expensive damage to your head ,so make sure they're OK.If well maintain 968 will give you tons of driving pleasures, resist the temptation of getting the car overly modifidied they pretty well sort out mechanical wise,suspension/wheels & tires/euro signals ligths & a SC steering wheels is what you want to spend your money on.But first get use to it & enjoye, btw you should introduce it to the 968 forum here on Rennlist.

Hi Rob.
You are right about the bug, I caught it last year but went straight to the water cooled side. Your 968 looks gorgeous. I would love to see more pics when you get them and here more about the car. Has it done many miles ? many previous owners ? any mods ?

WOW! Great car , Thinking of going that that direction myself after the 944 or maybe the 928 route , not sure yet , but the lines of that car point to that direction.
Good luck with her.

I have to ask, how do the 964 and 968 compare? similar weight and horsepower, the only difference being where the weight is placed. i imagine the 911 feels stronger when accelerating at least?

I ask because Ive often thought of going in the other direction!

Thanks guys

3 owners with 49K miles.

The service history book looks to be stamped up to date to 47K but the car is now being checked out at my shop for belts etc.

The MINI dealer was pretty helpful and let me put the car on their ramps and it looked very clean underneath commensurate with the low mileage.

The only modification I've found is an OEM adjustable rear sway bar which looks to be pretty new as it still has the Porsche sticker on it. I guess this is an MO30 package part?

It definitely needs new shocks on the front so just debating whether to stick the regular OEM ones (Boge?) on or go with something more exotic

I'll be using this everyday so I'm trying to resist too many mods to start with. I'll probably autocross the car at some point but it has to be reliable transport first, fun car second.

Your front end could have Boge/Sachs struts, or it could be Konis.. the adjustable Konis are well worth the $ especially if it has M030 sways (which your description makes it sound like!)

Wow, very clean, nice example... and welcome to the family of lesser Porsches!

I've yet to really lean on the 968 until my shop gives the OK (I must be getting old) so will report back on the 964-968 comparison. I suspect the 968 will have less drama than the flat six but I was impressed as to how smooth it is for a four cylinder.

Odd really but I lusted after a 964 for years, and then once I found a good one the allure seemed to fade. After 18 months it became a pampered garage queen with only the occasional AX outing and I'm not sentimental enough to just let car's sit.

I was looking for a Boxster and then the 968 turned up - everything works and it has the same solid feel that the 964 had but seems to be missing from the newer cars. Plus the 968 is more practical than the 986/987's - simple decision really!

thanks for reply, im kind of afraid the same will happen to me. im very happy with the 968 but ive always wanted an SC/3.2/964 of some type. i agree the passion can fade quickly if you put a car high on a pedestal. I think an older p-car (like a 968) is the wise choice over the newer massed produced models. although i can see the bang for buck value in a devalued 996 or boxster s, i think nothing beats the build quality of an older P-car of any type. Good luck to you!

I'll defintely get another 911 - probably a AX dedicated SC or even a middie - my neighbor's '76 911 is fun to drive despite being down on bhp - v.different to the 964.

The purity and simplicty of the early cars appeals, but the 964's zinc galvinizing appealed more
