This is about a z that was poorly repaired, not the use of spacers. The OP also no longer owns a 944...

Spacers have been used by porsche as oem for many years. Used correctly they are 100% safe and pose no further stress on the hubs than wheels of the same effective offset.

I've given this advice many times, but here goes...

Go to lowes and get a bunch of washers that have an ID that will go over the studs. Stack them on 3 studs until the wheel/tire doesn't rub and looks like you want. Then measure the thickness of the washer stack and order your spacers. I ended up getting adaptec adapters. They are wheel and hub centric and come with nuts for $120 or so. No pressing in longer studs and easy swap back to phonedials if needed.
