Default Question about 924S/early 944 dash

I feel really silly asking this question, but I can't even think of terms to use for a search.

As the former owner of a late 944, and the recent purchaser of a 924S, what the heck is the big thing in the center of the dash above the heat/AC vents??? It looks sort of like a speaker grille, but I don't hear any sound coming out of it. I have speakers in my door panels and by the rear seats.

It used to be a speaker in the 924 days. Now it's nothing. I've always thought it would make an awesome spot for a car computer.

Any thoughts on whether it would be possible and desirable to put some sort of subwoofer there???

My 83 944 had a single speaker under that and two in the back. The doors had no speaker pod or even holes in the metal for speakers.

Is opening that grille a simple matter of carefully prying it out? Or is there a trick?

radio came with either mono or stereo options; that was the mono speaker placement.

you just pull on it and it will come out...try prying just a little on the corners.

I've seen a few people convert that space for gauges.
