Default New car - Tell me what to do Rennlist

I probably should have made this thread rather than my other one, oh well.

Here are some pics of my new to me 84 n/a. It's gunna need a lot of work but I'm exited.

I'm thinking I'm going to pull the motor to make everything I want to do easier (rod bearings, head gasket, a/c delete, oil cooler seals, oil pan baffle) and I'll be able to put in the nice turbo clutch thats sitting on my shelf.

Did I miss anything? Paint yes, but after I get it running well

your nice turbo clutch won't fit unless you change bellhousings...

I guess I should have done some research before I said that. Are they interchangeable? I have a turbo bellhousing, pressure plate and flywheel too

$5,000 later she'll be a great car! You should look into high Compression Euro pistons while your rebuilding it.

%5,000??

I was thinking a few gaskets and a paint job! I guess I'm feeling a little too lucky

Euro pistons would be nice, but I don't plan on making a fast car. If I want to blow by my friends I'll drive the turbo. Also I may not know the exact definition for rebuilding, I was just going to do the rod bearings.

That's not the story I got. Supposably the PO's brother drove it untill the belt went and then gave it to him. It was in the middle of New York state. Do you have any information on the car you saw?

Sure, but unless you plan on increasing the power level the change does do much other that potential impact the racing class you are in. Stock NA clutches are plenty tough for racing the car at stock power levels.

If you want to race it pull the motor and build it right.

That means...

Head work - Simple cleaning, light decking to make it flat, valve grind to ensure they are working well. - Firgure $300 if you can re-use the parts (no new springs or valves)

Bottom end
All new main and rod beaings. Fresh bearings will add life to the motor and reduce risk of bearing failure. Also mod the pan for the trap door baffle.

If you want you could re-ring too. These don't cost that much and will also freshen the motor. Don't touch the bores at all. Just put the new rings in the old bores. It works on these motors.

When doing all this work firgure $1000 for all the bearings, gaskets, rings and incidentals. Fresh water pump is a good idea while you are there.

Rebuilt like this it should lasr 5 year racing and make 130-135 whp with the stock exhaust minus the cat.

Put a cage in it ($1500-2000) and put in the spec legal suspension ($2000) and you have 944 spec race car.

Oh skip the paint.... It does not make you any faster and the bigger smiles you will get when you drive past cars worth 10x the money.

I like the way you think But it's also going to be my daily driver and I'd like it to look good.

New rings are on my list now, especially since there's no way to tell if the car has 107xxx or 207xxx miles on it! Are the OEM Porsche rings worth the $100 over the aftermarket ones? I don't want to be cheap anywhere inside my engine but I don't like wasting money

Daily driver and race car don't mix... My 944 spec is not street legal, but is just a few mods away. Still I have no desire to drive it on the street. Too loud, too rough, no a/c, no heat.... why bother.

The real value in cheap 944 is the track and giving up all hope of comfortable street driving. If you do that you can have a cheap track car. If you want it comfortable on the street it will either suck as a track car or be very expensive to manage both.
