Default 924 DP factory race car... good upgrade from a 951 track car?

Title kind of says it all...

I'm thinking about selling my 944 Turbo S track car for this: http://bringatrailer.com/2011/05/19/...factory-racer/

Good idea? Bad idea? Thoughts?

Its, a far better idea to build your 944.

My current employer/boss (Kevin Doran) was Holbert's crew chief and ran much of his operation before his untimely death. I know what goes into making these types of cars and that one is built in 1980 most likely its not very safe and not very competitive with more modern designs.

I don't know man. Cool car for historical reasons, maybe not the best choice for competetive racing.

what if you changed the pistons, rods and picked up a few other parts you'll need to changover a 3.0 variocam to turbo and drop it in your track car? (like that car isn't already awesome). especially, since a 3.0 might be coming your way in the coming weeks.

Depends how much you value a car's history versus the ability to go faster. I would certainly entertain this car as a replacement for a converted, non-historic type car.

Might come down to where/how you plan on using the car. Seems to be a rare bird to begin with.

Looking at the comments below the ad - ideola mentioned that Frank Celenza owned a similar car.
Frank is on Rennlist - his RL name is Gums. I would definately contact him if I were you.

I looked at same car and thought the same, but ultimately felt that it was too much of a premium for the history and I don't plan on doing vintage racing.
I would save the money and put toward your own racing...

I have talked with Gums (Frank) and his comments were along the same vein - it'll take more money to maintain and campaign, and in the end might not be any better than what I have. I'm not sure I'm ready to devote money to race gas, 2 liter engines that spin to 8,400 RPM, slicks, etc.

I'd still like to look at it in person, though!

Also, in terms of racing, I have only done PCA club racing - and I bet the 924 DP would be a GT4 car. It might do reasonable well in its class, but, at the end of the day, the GT cars do better when you spend more money on them. Currently I'm in a stock class, where, although the newer cars tend to be faster, I usually find some good competition.

As far as coolness factor, it blows the turbo out of the water if you ask me.

Too many mods from the original Holbert car to be worth much as a historic vehicle. If it was still D Production specs, I'd jump all over it at $15K.
