Default first time 944 owner, muffler question

Long time lurker, first time poster here. After reading many of your posts, I used the information and helpful advice on this site to finally settle on my first 944 last spring. It's a 1988 n/a with 68,000 miles. I probably overpaid a bit at $6,995, but after a thorough look by a trusted mechanic, it seemed to be in great condition. Had a great time driving it last summer on the winding roads of Pennsylvania, but am now realizing the maintenance costs of owning such a vehicle.

At inspection time last week, two issues came up. Since I don't do my own work, a local mechanic is handling any necessary repairs. It needed a new wiper motor which he got for me for $320 and also needs a new muffler. Here's his problem - he tells me can't get a muffler for a 944 with a manual transmission. This does not make sense to me, as it's a common part....no?

I apologize in advance for what is probably a very basic question, but after searching for awhile in this forum for a solution, I'm hoping that someone can give me a quick answer that I can pass along to him. And possibly a place to buy one.

Thanks very much for any help that you can give!

There are about a bazillion different aftermarket mufflers out there. Find the dimensions of your current muffler and find one that is no larger (outside dimensions) You may need to bend some pipe to get it all to line up as it may not line up as stock. Any decent muffler shop can do this type of install.

Goodluck!

Jeff, Sorry dude, but you got ripped off. New wiper motor? Firstly I have never seen one fail, but I guess they can. What this does mean however is that you should have gone used. I could have sold you wiper motor for $100 and you still probalby would have overpaid me.

Now how does this relate to mufflers. Well stock ones easy to get used and new stock ones are probabyl stupid expensive. Consider yourself lucky he did not sell you one. Just take the car to a muffler shop and they can weld in any muffler easy. Nothing special.

Now if you really do need a new one do some research here on what to buy. I live in Az so we have no rust so I have never encountered a failed stock muffler.

Best adivce is to stick around here before your guy does any more work or you buy any more parts.

get a magnaflow about 14~18" X 11" X 5"... yes. screw the oem muffler. run a big fat glasspack.

the bigger the better. i am currently in a 22" X 11" X 5" w/ 3" in/out in advance of my LS3 install this summer.

straight through design and on my 3.0 it is quiet.... just an exotic sound at at wot.

Welcome to 944 ownership! Take the time to appreciate that your car is 23 years old and not everything can be found easily and that sometimes "used" is better (well, at least cheaper) than "new".

Take to heart as well that, learning to do some of the fixes yourself, with the help of forums and the internet, can also save some money down the road.

On the otherhand, sometimes it is worth the time/convenience to have someone else fix items you are otherwise unable to do.

enjoy your car and don't be afraid to ask for advice out here!

Jeff,
Welcome to the 944 land.
Joe is right.Check out 944online.com for used parts the next time.
Exhaust ? Go stainless cat back but buy a new one. You may also need the two rubber hangers.
Pelican and others are all around the same price. Get the one with free shipping.
Also, it doesn`t take hours to do the re and re for the muffler, maybe 1-1 1/2 hours at the most.
Keep your eye on that dude or find another shop.

Thanks to everyone for their honest feedback - I really appreciate the assistance. Just to make sure I'm clear and headed in the right direction, could one of the guys that pointed me online to buy the muffler just push me a little farther in the right direction? Here's a link from Pelican for OEM muffler for $459.

http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/..._pg1.htm#item0

OE Muffler, 924S/944 (1988, For Manual Transmissions Only), 944S/S2 (1987-91), Each
Brand: Dansk [More Info] $459.00

Is that what I'm looking for? Or something different? If someone could post a quick link to what I need to buy, I would appreciate! Thanks!

Just have an exhaust shop weld up an aftermarket muffler... any muffler with 2.25" center inlet & outlet in similar size to the original will work fine.

Shouldn't cost more that about 50-60$ to get the welding done.

Well, if you really want to buy a new cat-back, you'll really like the dansk. I went that way.
Something very weird about how pelican lists this item - 924S/944 and 944S/S2 are different, so be careful and don't buy the wrong one. pelican is great - call 'em up and get it right.
I usually find Automotion kind of pricey (great catalog, though). In this case looks pretty good:

Hacksaw, two band clamps, and an aftermarket muffler that is the same dimensions might set you back $150 and you'll learn a little on the way. If you need some step by step directions and or a direct link on a muffler to buy let me know. I run a 12in Borla Xr-1 on my car and it's too small (read loud). If you do a search you can find the 944 n/a exhaust thread with a bunch of different mufflers on it.
