Default Help with changing out the 5th gear

As the title states, I need to change out my 5th gear in my early trans.

my 1984 944 trans has the tall 5th gear and I have a spare 1988 924s trans that has a short 5th that I want to swap into my tranny. I want to use my trans because I have a LSD in it and I was told swapping the 5th gears was easier then swapping the diff's.

Anyone have notes or any photos of your trans updates that you could email me or post on here ? All input welcomed, I hate going into this blindly and the factory manuals are less then my cup o tea for these things.

Lots of detailed photos when I did the swap last year. When I did my swap I started with the Hybrid link as a start, but I built on that and got into some additional details that shows the internals a bit better.

Thanks Joe.
Funny thing is that I was on the 944spec site last night looking for such a write up. I think I was in the discussion threads though

Well, half a vacation day gone by and slow progress. Hoping second half is more !

fwiw, the tallest swappable 5th gear I could find in the US is the 0.68 in the 80-82 Audi 5000 Diesel. There was a much taller swappable 0.48 5th in the european Turbo Diesel.

If anyone's interested, I should have a short 0.83 951 5th gear set available in a month or so...

I'm grafting in the Turbo tranny and NA 5th gear this weekend to the beast. I'll have a Turbo 5th gearset for sale too.

Rob - I might take that off your hands in a month or so if you still have it.
