Im not quite familiar with the brake setup on the 83... pic?

If the caliper is the type that only one side has the piston and the other side is a slide type, then all you have to do is compress the caliper a little and you can leave the pads in the caliper. If the brake line is a hard line going into the caliper, then you will need to break the line loose, but hey, its a chance to bleed the brakes anyway

In either form, you can do it in about 20 minutes or so per side once you really look at it...

Yea it only has the piston on one side. Should be pretty straight forward. The brakes have the hard lines too.

This pic may help... It should be the same as your '83. What happened to mine was, the brakes weren't adjusted ever, and when I yanked on the handle, they had to travel so much the retaining spring popped out, and the edge of the shoe rubbed on the vertical surface of the drum It is important to follow the procedure for adjustment pretty closely (two clicks yadda yadda). In my case I had to pull the rotor to replace the spring, but you can see how the big hole aligns with the star wheel. Even when you have that done, it's a be-yatch to turn the star wheel, very little leverage. And it isn't obvious which way to turn to adjust the pads outward.

Is it best to remove the hard brake line at the caliper, or back where it attaches the rubber line?
